| BlackHaddock (175), , England | | March 30, 2012 Visited twice during New Year weekend (08-09).
First visit early afternoon fairly quiet and we sat/stood by one of the big barrles in the front room. This bar room has all manner of items hanging from the ceiling, puppets, flags, hats and other rubbish. The bar is impressive all wood and carved, the waiter helpful bearded and fat.
Second visit we had to sit in the third or back room, obviously once an uncovered courtyard, now covered and heated. Diffferent waiter, same results, no problems and a swift friendly service. The middle and back rooms are less cluttered with items but still let you know you are in a bar where beer and having fun is the most important thing.
Good selection of beers both on tap and in bottles, a very nice bar.
| | thebeermonk (12), , Netherlands | | March 22, 2012 Might have some beers, couldn’t locate a menu in any form what so ever.
Barstaff seems not allowed to talk to those sitting at the bar. A waiter is needed to take your order whilst the barman ignores you completely. | | shoulderbroken (60), Tokyo, Japan | | November 26, 2011 Always seems busy and full of tourists drinking big glasses of Kwak. Decent enough selection (usual rubbish but with some good stuff in there too, De Dolle, for example) but prices a little on the high side but not too excessive. Nice decor, beer stuff and random junk all over the place. On my most recent visit the service was good, but previously the staff have been a bit surly. Worth a stop off though. Stairs to the toilet are insanely steep, so probably better to do earlier on in the pub crawl. | simpy1 (2), Leiden, Netherlands does not count - explanation | | November 14, 2011 Was met with a wall of unhappy looking tourists, and soon found out why. Rude & arrogant staff, and very high prices. Compared with Het Waterhuis, this place was no good at all. We left without buying anything! | | Rastacouere (581), Montréal, Quebec | | November 7, 2011 Easily located in the largest square in town, this beer bar is highly convenient and pleasant enough, but unexceptional in a city with a good array of great bars. The hundred beers or so do not venture too far off the beaten track. Its easy to get to location still make it a must for anyone staying in Gent a couple of days though.
| | Boudicca (205), London, England | | August 28, 2011 The Dulle Griet is a huge mediaeval cannon which is on display by the canal, just off the Friday Market. It was named after Dull Gret (or “Mad Meg”), a Flemish folklore character who is depicted in a painting by Pieter Brueghel the Elder. The Dulle Griet tavern, named after the cannon, sits right on the Friday Market, with a few tables outside overlooking the square, and has a large painting of its namesake opposite the bar.
It’s a fairly noisy, cluttered place, despite the high ceiling in the main bar, with a jumble of tables, chairs and stools. There are four main rooms at ground level, with increasingly uneven floors until you arrive at the backmost room. This was originally a courtyard and retains its cobblestone paving, ivy and shop fronts. The second room from the front, the smallest, has beer posters and bottles on the shelves and the third room is decorated with posters, plaques and mugs hanging from the ceiling. There’s also a small room upstairs which overlooks the “courtyard” and is accessed via vertiginously steep stairs – more like a ladder, really – although it was closed when we last visited.
There is waiter service from the bar provided by young men in long black aprons. My experience has been that it’s reasonably efficient but not overly friendly.
As with many of the more popular places in central Gent, they have a beer of the month and a BOGOF offer (buy one, get one free; actually, they say “buy one and get the second free” but I prefer the supermarket-inspired acronym). In June the beer of the month was Pater Lieven and there were several other regulars such as Lindemans Kriek and La Chouffe on tap. The bottle list is very extensive and can be rather daunting. The bottles are listed alphabetically, by brewer I think although they do list all the krieks together.
I quite like this place but it’s not my favourite in Gent, not least because there are big variations in price and some excessive mark-ups. For example, bottles of 3 Fonteinen and Cantillon were E11 and E12 respectively, compared with E5.80 at the Waterhuis where pricing is much more consistent.
(Last visited 9 June 2011).
| | bierwabbe (15), , Belgium | | August 1, 2011 Great selection, youngish crowd though it varies based on time of day -- can be either overcrowded and noisy, or more low-key. Classic Flanders beer bar, gotta go here at least once. Nice to see Cantillon gueuze on the menu, it’s not easy to find outside Brussels. De rigueur beer paraphernalia everywhere. Good place. | | tderoeck (93), Gent, Belgium | | July 4, 2011 Very good selection (beer bible) although sometimes a bit classic and old fashioned. Very touristic, especially the BS thing they do with the basket on the ceiling where you have to deposit your shoe as a guarantee that you will bring back the special glassware for the house beer ("Max"). Often unfriendly staff, although I’ve had friendly waiters as well. But I’ll never forget that we were forbid to play cards one night, when still being a student. (Owner: "there will be no playing cards in my bar!") | | nate2g (320), Marlborough, New Zealand | | March 22, 2011 I wasn’t really expecting much due to the other reviews but I actually had an enjoyable few beers here. St Bernardus 8 on tap amongst others I hadn’t seen elsewhere, and same goes for the bottle menu with a few unique brews. Nice location. Service was decent. Yeah Dulle Griet is alright. | | Zenwolf (52), Waterloo, Ontario | | September 10, 2010 Very quite the two times I was in.. met a couplle of beer tourists.. and a drunk lady on her honeymoon who was more accustomed to Bud light. decent place with a good local selection. |
