| JCB (120), Durham, North Carolina | | May 20, 2012 Stopped by a couple months ago while NCAA Tournament games were going on very nearby. Challenging navigation to this place, but it was very much worthwhile in terms of selection. Independent grocery store, fairly spacious and well stocked with basics and niche items. Off to the left hand side of the store is a very well-stocked liquor section with a terrific assortment of brews. Very well represented Belgians and Scandinavians alongside national and local craft. Some real treats in here along with a nice assortment of growlers. Very much worth a stop, just a few minutes off the highway. | | bmerz (61), New York | | May 4, 2012 Dropped in after hitting up a handful number of Charlotte’s beer spots. This is a great spot and well worth stopping if you are in Greensboro or nearby. Despite being a neighborhood grocery store it has character. It is a long cry from mega chain or discount supermarkets and feels from a different era, as does the neighborhood and intersection it is in. The selection is huge and said to be expanding again soon. There is one long wall of cooled single bottles and six packs and ever growlers pre-filled to go which I haven’t seen before. Almost everything is cold which is unusual. The NC selection is very large and the Belgian selection is really good including many less common breweries and bottles. Other regions have representation. The beer isle clerk was very helpful recommending NC bombers to try as most are new to me. | | Onenote81 (72), Winston-Salem, North Carolina | | May 3, 2012 Originally reviewed: 5/30/09. I came here looking for Terrapin’s Monk’s Revenge, as I heard they still had it in stock. Walk in the door and the beer is on the left side of the store. Holy crap, what a selection!! They did indeed still have some Monk’s Revenge, but they also had the #2 side project, Gamma Ray! I grabbed a bottle of that. I continue to look around and there’s some corked and caged Double Simcoe. Alright! Grabbed one of those... They carry an insane amount of brews, and this is a grocery store! Crazy. I saw some limited release bottles that were released awhile ago, that I will not mention here as someone else may go and grab them before I can get back there. This store is only rivaled in the area by City Beverage in Winston...on selection. This store, on the other hand, blows CB out of the water on affordability. Prices are much more reasonable here. I think I’m going to make the trek out here more often. Plus, talked to the owner, at least I think it was the owner, and he was genuinely nice and offered his assistance. The guys at CB are helpful, but not always the most warm and friendly. This place rocks!! I will be back again and again. | | jrob21 (45), Atlanta, Georgia | | March 20, 2012 Incredible store with incredible staff. Consistently have Old Hickory which is a desparately underrated brewer probalby because they do not distribute very far. Nice lineup of growlers as well which is an added bonus you don’t find in every store. Local and regional representation of breweries combined with an international lineup that rivals many stores, this is a one stop shop for something you defnitely have not had before. When I am in town, this is my first and usually my only stop and I am never dissapointed. | | Hussey (12), North Carolina | | March 16, 2012 I am a blessed soul. Bestway is a five minute walk from my house. Leslie the "Beer Goddess" always talks up her latest malted find. She is awesome. I always bring her a bomber of my homebrewed IPA. I value her opinion. The rest of the staff are great also. Clayton is a walking, talking encyclopedia of beer. Great selection. Great people. I sometimes go to just stare at the wall of beer . . . | CarolinaKevin (1), Charlotte, North Carolina does not count - explanation | | February 20, 2012 Been going to bestway for a while now, and it seems to be the best place in NC to find craft beer. Selection is unmatched and service is spot on. Roger is a great guy, and will hook you up when possible with the more limited releases. I recommend anyone who is visiting NC and hasn’t stopped by bestway, to do so! | wtcecil (5), Greensboro, North Carolina does not count - explanation | | September 4, 2011 Awesome place! Lots of choices, tastings all the time, and great sales. Also, love the fact that they sell glassware. | | Thorpe429 (36), Alexandria, Virginia | | September 1, 2011 This place doesn’t look like much from the outside, though that certainly changes once you enter. The majority of the store is for groceries, though the beer selection off to the left will not disappoint. Nice lined cooler with plenty of beer, along with some shelving in the middle of the aisle with a nice selection of Belgian lambic and Fantome saisons.
Up and down the aisle, there’s a wide array of U.S. craft and imports. Toward the front is a nice cooler with a pretty diverse growler selection from North Carolina breweries. Atop the aisle is a good amount of magnum bottles to choose from. I was particularly impressed with the amount of Cantillon they had available, and especially the number of Fantome bottles they had in stock. In addition, there was a great selection of glassware.
Service was very good. We didn’t have particular beer questions, but the staff member was very friendly and did help us find a spot to eat nearby.
In addition to the huge selection, everything was quite reasonably priced, with some of the lower prices that I had come across. Next time I’m down this way, I’ll definitely pay this place another visit. | | planbee (35), North Carolina | | August 16, 2011 If you can’t tell by the other reviews, you best get yourself to Bestway if you’re in the area. This and Sam’s are by far the most fun stores in NC. I love the ambiance of this place. It reminds me of the old grocery stores that were common here once, except you can spend an hour in aisle 7. Though I only stopped in for a few specific things, I spent half an hour inside gazing at the glowing, buzzing wall of beers. Two people asked if I needed help and both were well up on the newest items and even told me about some things that were running low. To me, the selection is the most jaw-dropping in the area, Not the biggest or most comprehensive, but the most desirable. I won’t bore you with a list of items, just get there and plan on wanting cases and cases of their stock. | | adam42381 (30), Fort Myers, Florida | | July 25, 2010 Excellent beer store. I’d never gone before this past Saturday, but I must say I will definitely be back. The selection is top notch for this area and the service was impeccable. The guy who helped me was very knowledgeable and gave some excellent recommendations based on they types of beer I was looking for. The fact that all the beer is refrigerated is a big plus. I would definitely suggest checking this place out if you’re in the Greensboro area.
The only negative I have is that I wish they allowed you to pull bottles from their packs but the guy said it’s way too much trouble. This is where Total Wine beats them but the service makes up for the difference. |
