| jcnielsen (26), Kansas City, Missouri | | May 11, 2012 Amazing beer selection. If I’m anywhere near Iowa City, I will definitely come here. Also, next door is a cool beer glass store that has tons of unique beer glasses. | | mcberko (59), Vancouver, British Columbia | | March 28, 2012 Old review. Did a mailorder here about a year ago. Great selection to choose from (despite their online inventory not being completely up-to-date), helpful customer service and a very quickly-shipped and well-packed box of 12 beers sent over. Would definitely order here again. | Leanu (4), Red Lodge, Montana does not count - explanation | | March 24, 2012 Wonderful store. I was introduced to dozens of Belgians here. The staff is more knowledgeable than any other I’ve ever dealt with (these are highly sought after positions in the young beer and wine community in the area, everyone wants to be a "John’s Guy"). I have seen some complaints on here about them being rude or snobbish, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. They are just like us, beer guys, and with that comes strong opinions. If they didn’t have opinions I would have shopped elsewhere! Also, their wine guy is brilliant. Glassware is impressive, and I still buy it there and have it shipped. Beer selection is huge, we’re talking well over a thousand to choose from over the three years I was in the area. | jstraw (8), Chicago, Illinois does not count - explanation | | February 22, 2012 Seemingly just a corner college grocery, but inside appears to be a charming yet sophisticated little market. Didn’t check much else besides beer, but the wine area looked appealing. The beer selection was deep, with very satisfying selections in local Iowa brews and an especially broad collection of Belgians, including a couple Fantomes and a rarer chestnut Jolly Pumpkin. Good assistance and advice from the beer manager. | ljstephenson (5), Enterprise, Alabama does not count - explanation | | December 23, 2011 Best selection and customer service ever experienced. Employees go out of their way to help you out in every way. Absolute experts on beer. Sent girlfriend in there with beer list and they took care of the rest. Awesome awesome place. | | tronraner (110), Walland, Tennessee | | September 21, 2011 Neat little corner grocery store. You could totally miss the beer if you aren’t looking for it; it’s tucked away in a separate room in the far corner. Impressive Belgian selection and lots of locals, too (check the cooler for some of them). Most things are available in singles, which is definitely nice. Prices are average. It was pretty busy when I was there, but the staff was working their butts off to keep everyone satisfied. Worth a stop. | | GraniteSkunk (10), Moline/Quad Cities, Illinois | | September 15, 2011 John’s is a must for anyone traveling along I-80 in Iowa. It’s about 10 minutes from the interstate, and WELL worth the time. It’s a small-ish corner grocery store. The beer staff is on the ball with what they carry, and with what’s available to them. The shelves are usually pretty well stocked, and they keep fresh stuff on hand, most of the time. The selection of imports is second to none in this part of the country, and they’ve recently started carrying Thomas Hardy, going back several years. There is also a sizable walk in cooler with quite a few craft bottle selections. Ask to be taken into the "glass house" for a world class glassware selection. Both branded and unbranded glass of all types, and some decent breweriana as well. Side note - known as "Dirty John’s" for selling underage kids Playboy back in the late 50’s. | | wlajwl (18), Quad Cities, Iowa | | May 12, 2011 [ Updated January 30, 2012 ] Among the best places for hard to find beer in eastern Iowa. It seems a little ancient in there, the old school corner grocery store is hard to find in the area. Generally they have great selection, they always seem to get sampler packs before anyone else and keep them in stock longer. Great place. | | adnielsen (277), Fort Collins, Colorado | | April 8, 2011 Unparalleled beer selection for Iowa. The beer section is in the back and includes hundreds of warm bottles in addition to a bunch in the walk in cooler. I found some real gems here including three different Cantillons. | cyclonematty (9), Iowa does not count - explanation | | February 26, 2011 When I stopped at the infamous "Dirty John’s" I wasn’t treated with respect. I wasn’t helped and when tried to ask a question was given a simple answer and the guy moved on to someone else. Not happy. |
