I have been to this place a million times, but I never reviewed it. I used to love this place. I was amazed by their selection. Now adays, I find their selection has gone downhill. The slelction is still good, but only by supermarket standards. It is by no means the equal of Whole Foods Bowery (not even close). I’d say it’s close to Whole Foods Union Square, just for having a relatively decent selection, the occasional beer that I may not have tried (or would like to try again), and fair prices. Other than that, the place has a nice, clean, well-lit atmosphere (it IS Whole Foods). No growlers, but it does have an occasional tasting by varios brewers. The service is ok. It’s not like WF Bowery, or Tribeca, where there is a employee who is a beer geek working right in the section. Worth a stop if you happen to be right nearby.

The quality of the beers has definitely gone downhill since they opened about 3 years ago. For the most part, an uninteresting bottle selection which is a shame since the quality was far superior in the 1st year that the store was open. Definitely not a destination for good beer.

Ambiance and food aside (I means its a Whole Foods) this place is getting really uninteresting. I have lived a long walk away from this place for 18 months. The selection has got worse since day 1. The small self space has been losing bomber room to 6 pack room. This means only like 20 different beer in 6 packs and 12 packs. The big bottles are standards like Stone and Rogue, plenty of Unibroue and the other regular. Prices are fair but can get cheap when there is a sale on a certain beer. Its not even worth a stop nowadays.

I went to the store just today in order to peruse their stock after being recommended by a member of this site. After just a few minutes I found the beer section. Unlike most supermarkets it was not a challenge to find something I have never tasted, in fact, just the opposite. Above that, the prices were much better than I expected from an upscale food chain. As I was looking over the stock (which lacking in serving size choices) one employee came over and started making recommendations. He seemed very knowledgeable about the products as well as beer in general as he was pointing out a variety pack that contained several beer types. I will be returning here again and again, no question about it.

The store is located just north of the LIE on 106/107 and is housed in the old Waldbaum’s supermarket. My friend Russell had told me about this place and I made my first visit yesterday. The supermarket itself is in a word gorgeous. Bright and well lit, with a wonderful selection of food items. I especially liked the section with loose grains and flour. The beer section is 100% refrigerated, which I liked. Very nice selction of imports as well as domestic micros that are difficult to locate on Long Island. I was impressed by this store overall and will definitely come back even though it is about 18 miles from my office.

[second update - the selection and rotation of product has been really lame the last six months - I can go to a middle-of-the-road beer distributor for better product - update - I’ve visited this place several time in the past few months, and one thing I have noticed is that, although their product moves pretty well, they don’t get anything new in (they haven’t had a single new item in stock in the two months I’ve been going)] I’ve entered this place even though it is technically a grocery store, because, for Long Island, it has a wonderful beer selection. I’d always heard that, for a chain grocery store, Whole Foods had a good selection, but I was not at all prepared for what I encountered. Allagash Curieux and other special releases, rare DFH brews, Heavyweight Barrel-Aged Old Salty, Southampton Bombers and the new 750s, and the list goes on. The six pack prices are kind of high, but the single bottles (whether 12oz, bomber or 750) are fairly competitive (Hair of the Dog 12 ounces for 3.50, Southampton bombers for 4.99, BA Old Salty for 7.99, DFH Golden Shower for 9.99, etc.). It’s less than half a mile from 495 (LI Expressway), making it great for a quick stop on your way somewhere, not to mention the fact that it really is a nice grocery store without the beer selection.
