| BeerBelcher (134), Columbus, Ohio | | April 26, 2009 Until recently, I lived in the Milwaukee area, but somehow never made it to the place. I was happy to be back in the area so I could get a chance to visit. The "American Club" was quite nice, and the Horse and Plow seemed a homey and casual oasis within it. The downstairs bar with lots of wood reminded me of "The Tombs" in Georgetown. I sat at the bar and was impressed by the thoughtful-ness of the 12 taps present....a nice selection of mid-western beers which included some new offerings from New Glarus hadn’t had (Black Wheat). The beer tasted good, and I had a really good club sandwich (with pesto) and sweet potato fries (why can’t all fries be sweet potato fries?). The bar-tendress was quick and pleasant, and knew what was in her charge (knew all the beers on draft, etc). I was pretty happy with my visit, and would happily return the next time I’m in the area. | | Ughsmash (138), Waukesha, Wisconsin | | January 8, 2008 I stayed at the American Club for business for 2 weeks, and just about hit The Horse and Plow every night. The restaurant is large with an ideal lower area for large groups and a darker, warm, cozy feel to it. Since the previous reviews, a lot has changed (beer-wise), and this place deserves its spot on Ratebeer! They have interesting taps from throughout Wisconsin, and advertise a sampler of those.. they also bring in kegs of great stuff such as the New Glarus Unplugged beers, Big Eddy, and others.. the bottle list has the likes of Kentucky Breakfast (which I drank almost every night) and plenty of other goodies. They also hold beer dinners with representatives from solid breweries (which I have not been able to attend). The food was good, but the menu was on the smaller side.. there’s phenominal food and wine upstairs at the other restaurants if you’re interested. This is a must-stop if you’re near Kohler. | | beervana (32), Libertyville, Illinois | | January 21, 2006 I’m staying at the American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin for the weekend and came cross this amazing bar in the basement. Lots of interesting local micro brews on tap and I tried the New Glarus Spotted Cow, Sand Creek Oscar’s Chocolate Stout, and Great Dane’s American Pale ale. Cozy, comfortable place. Very good ambiance. Fun place to be at just to sample the brews.. Next time I come here, I’ll try out the food. | | kmeves (100), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin | | December 21, 2005 You probably won’t find higher quality food in this type of an establishment. The Horse and Plow and the adjacent American club are world class establishments. I don’t know why this place would make any ratebeer list other than the fact that the bar will have its share of Wisconsin micro-brews. Most of the clientelle are people staying at the American Club hotel or Golfers from the nearby Blackwolf Run course. Really more of a Martini and Highball tyoe of establishment but worth a look if you’ve never been to Kohler. | | ElGaucho (183), Minnetonka, Minnesota | | September 5, 2005 The reason this place is in here is because they have 12 different Wisconsin micros on tap. As of 9/3/05, the list included New Glarus Spotted Cow, New Glarus Fat Squirrel Nut Brown Ale, Port Washington Brewing Co. Pier 96 Lager, Tyranena Brewing Bitter Woman IPA, Louie’s Demise Amber Ale, Harbor City Main Street Brown Ale, Leinenkugel’s Honey Weiss, South Shore Nut Brown Ale, Miller Lite, Hinterland Irish Stout, Sprecher Black Bavarian, & Capital Brewery Oktoberfest. The ivy covered walls on the exterior of the building adjacent to the beautiful American Club Resort are inviting and promising, but the interior doesn’t quite deliver on that promise. The wood is oak, which is very Wisconsin, but not all that attractive. It’s a fun bar, and was plenty busy on a Labor Day weekend Saturday when we were there, but I was hoping for something more Irish and cozy. Nevertheless, if in the area, check out their latest beer menu online and see if they have anything you haven’t rated yet. |
