Nice brewpub located in a college town. Seems to be always busy. Very popular with locals for sure. Excellent beers and good food. Have never been able to sample Owd Mac’s. One of these days I will get lucky!

Saturday afternoon passing through Kansas. Huge interior, lots of wood. Service was friendly and efficient. Had 7 or so of their beers on tap. I had the gumbo, which was quite good.

Visited Free State on a Saturday, early afternoon in the summer. The building is tucked in an old strip of Mass St. in downtown Lawrence, really cool spot. There were some people milling about in front, waiting for a table. Luckily we were seated right away with only 2 people. The waitress was nice but rushed because of the crowd. There were 10 beers on tap, which could be ordered in a number of formats; sample glasses were $1.55 each, with no restriction on how many or few must be ordered. 10 oz. beers are $3.55. Good prices, and the beer was solid. The food was, too; my wife liked her sandwich and fries and my salad was good. The brewing operation (not the main production facility, I’m told) is visible through glass windows at the back of the small bar area; there is also a mezzanine with more tables. Not the easiest place to relax and have some beers because it’s cramped and crowded, but otherwise a nice place worth visiting in Lawrence.

Visited with beastiefan2k - pretty much your typical American brewpub - quite a bit of space inside, but spread out into various smaller "chambers," so despite its size it still seemed a little cramped - typical brewpub setup, with light hardwood tables and bar - mostly cozy inside - family friendly, so that’s a bonus - about eight beers on tap - your typical brewpub selections, with porters, stouts, ipas and the like - nothing fancy - beers range from ho-hum to awesome - decent bar service - excellent prices on the beers - it’s a solid spot, but doesn’t live up to some of the higher ratings IMHO.

The main bar was pretty busy when I arrived around five, but I did get a seat. Good thing, because it was jam packed with the dinner crowd by 6 or 7. Despite being standing room only, the servers did an excellent job keeping everyone happy, being friendly to strangers like me, and giving the locals a heavy dose of shit. Very entertaining. Beers were very solid, especially a porter and stout. Food was above average. The glimpse into the brewery area where Owd Mac may or may not be maturing was priceless.

This is a must-go brewery if you are in the Lawrence area. The restaurant has been pretty packed when I’ve visited on weekends. Good selection (usually around 10-12 beers) and good quality beer. The food at Free State is pretty also. There have been a couple of times when I’ve had crappy service from servers, but overall a great place.

This place really reminded me of Mtn Sun in Boulder. Large tap selection, good looking food (I didn’t try it, however), lots of hippies, and good looking hippie chicks. Would love to frequent this place. I did have one unfortunate experience with a server that was incredibly rude, but overall, I love this place.

Definitely come here if you’re in Lawrence for even just a few hours. The menu is great, especially the daily specials, and the beers are all delicious. I particularly like their IPAs, porters, and stouts. The servers have usually tried most or all of the beers and are very friendly, and the building has plenty of seating as well.

Nice Brewpub in downtown Lawrence. Worth a trip to wind down an evening/night.

I was on my way to a concert next door and was surprised to find a top notch brew pub right there, from out of state I enjoyed myself on the patio, the beer was very good the service was great for as busy as it was on a weeknight! Popular place for sure! Well worth a visit, good beer and good service = a favorite
