A superbly preserved gem of a pub. Even in a place like Liverpool, where great pub architecture abounds, the Lion is outstanding. It’s decorated throughout in honey coloured wood, ornately etched glass and thistle pattern art deco tiles. The main bar has little serving hatches into the drinking corridor and there are two back rooms, one of which has a magnificent stained glass cupola and a copper surround fireplace. The beer selection wasn’t bad either and the service was friendly. (Visited 17 January 2012).

One of those classic Liverpool Victorian boozers that manage to combine the ornate with the functional. Lots of tiling, etched glass and wood panelling. Half a dozen handpumps, including one from Liverpool Organic, when I visited. Very quiet on a Tuesday afternoon but I was soon engaged in conversation by the two bar staff and the only other customer. Food is of the extended bar snack variety including sandwiches, pork pies etc.
