The Anchor Tap was originally the brewery tap for Courage, whose Anchor Brewhouse was opened in the late eighteenth century and closed in the latter part of the twentieth. The brewery sprawled over a large area and itís been renovated and refurbished to accommodate flats, shops and bars although the area still retains a Dickensian feel. The Anchor Tap is now a Sam Smithís pub and itís like a time warp - a completely unspoilt warren of rooms, all with dark oak panelling, nicotine stained walls and chocolate brown ceilings. There are only two hand pumps but the beer was in excellent condition and itís well worth a visit just to soak up the atmosphere even if, as when we were there, itís as quiet as the grave.

WoW. I did not think places like this existed in central London any more.
Lovely BROWN pub that seems to be unspoilt from ugly music and dozens of tv screens with sport.
Small rooms to relax with your friends and enjoy your beer.
Mostle Sam Smith ale. But that works really fine!
The place is kind of hidden behind the main road to Tower Bride. No tourist (like me hehe)

Visited around 3pm on Saturday 3rd January 2015.
Trad old boozer in the typical Sam Smiths mould, a rabbit warren of rooms largely formed around a central bar, lots of wood and pretty dark. Old Joannah in the room at the rear where we camped out.
Usual Sam Smiths range, OBB on cask, 3 or 4 kegs, half a dozen bottles which are not good vfm compared to the tap range - think upwards of £5 a bottle for shitty fruit beers etc!
The place was pretty quiet but still a nice vibe, service prompt and friendly.
Decent back street boozer of old and worth a look if in the area.

Visited a few times over the years and most recently over the summer. Feels worn and tired which comes as no surprise considering the foot traffic that must pass through this pub. Friendly barman. Not far from Dean Swift and Draft House but could be a worthy stop on a crawl around Tower Bridge for a pint of stout.

Very nice pub very near to Tower Bridge. Samuel Smithís beers are served over there and they are in very good price.

February 3, 2005. Updated February 15, 2007: 6 different rooms. Sombre wood panelling. Dirty brown embossed wallpaper. No crowds. No cask beers - all keg or bottles. Interesting place.
August 2012. Update: There are more rooms upstairs, and now serves Old Brewery bitter from the cask. Wooden cask as well.
Food is cheap, but you get what you pay for. Itís fresh, but not top quality. The cabbage, for example, will be more stalk than leaves.

This was also off the tourist area. Some nice beers that you cannot find at other bars in town. I really liked the small place with garden and many areas to relax. the staff was top notch. A nice old English Pub. No food when I was there.

Took me a while to find this all Samuel Smiths brewery and got into discussion with all walks of life here. Enjoyed Three Samuel Smiths beers on tap, of course.

Good for a laugh and just a social visit. Now with S. Smith in the saddle everything has gone Tadcaster. You can have a fine blended Samuel Smith Whisky or Cognac, maybe some Samuel Smith lemonade or perhaps one of their beers. I donít suppose they use Samuel Smithís toilet cakes in the menís rooms. Good for the odd tasting but a little too much of the mother-load can give you a nasty headache.

We went here after a Christmas party for work years back, it was good fun. I would revisit for the memories.
