| Scopey (150), Croydon, England | | March 10, 2011 Nelson Wines has to be one of best kept-secrets of the London beer scene. I visited it for the first time yesterday and was both surprised and delighted with what was on offer. It is a fairly regular looking off-license from the outside, which holds a bounty of Belgian and British beers (as well as some German, US and Czech stuff). In particular it had a good selection of trappist and lambic offerings. What made it even better was the value, which has to be the cheapest in London (£2.79 for Girardin Black Label anyone?). Another good offer is the buy 12 beers get 10% -off deal. The owner, who has been there since 1985 was very helpful and knowledgeable. Well worth the journey outside the centre! | | mullet (224), Melbourne, Australia | | April 4, 2010 Weird place. You’d never guess they had the range they do from the outside. One of those places where you’re almost certain to stumble across some dusty rarity at the back of some shelf. For instance they had some 4 year old Hofbrouwerijke beers when I was there, but not knowing how they age I left them be. Plenty of Belgian, German and UK stuff. Prices seemed good, but everything seems cheap in the UK these days. | | tdtm82 (61), , England | | February 21, 2010 Probably one of the best value beer shops in England apart from Beermerchants.com A fantastic range. A substantial amount of UK craft beer. A good representation from Germany but not as many as Kriss Wines. An excellent Belgiun and UK selection had me wanting to return for more. Could do with some more beers from the US but an excellent competitor to Utobeer. Cool old rocknroll vinyl being played on the inhouse record player. Great Aladdin’s cave. | kester (7), , Netherlands does not count - explanation | | April 23, 2009 Just thought I’d add a rating in here as there hasn’t been one for a while. So I wasn’t even sure if it was going to be there... the shop is still there, and still opening at 6 on weekdays.
I didn’t count the bottles but there is still a brilliant beer selection from the British Isles (lots of bottle conditioned, and several more obscure), plenty from Germany and Belgium too with almost everything you’d expect and lots you wouldn’t.
More choice than I’ve seen in most places in the UK. Well worth travelling south along the Northern Line for a beer in the Sultan and a top up on some interesting bottles. | Orinoco (1), London, England does not count - explanation | | March 24, 2006 Massive selection of bottled beers (400+). Now, with the demise of the Beer Shop prbably the best beer shop in London | | louchemobile (10), Barrow-in-Furness, England | | March 28, 2005 \worthy of wider recognition. | | duff (40), St, Margarets, England | | September 15, 2004 Very decent selection at this place. Probably the best slection of German beers in London. Good selection of belgians, including Westvleteren, Rochefort, Girardin. Some decent French Biere de Gardes, and decent slection of British ales. theres also some US beers (standard Goose Island, Anchor, Sierra Nevada stuff you can get in most of the better stores in London), good selection of beers from a wide variety of countries. Found a couple of bottle out of date, but most were pretty fresh, i like this place, but it has strange opening ours, opens after 6pm on weekdays??!!!??? Good selection though. |
