| BlackHaddock (175), , England | | April 2, 2012 Proper locals pub (or people who work locally). My wife and I squeezed in on a Saturday night (Feb 2011) and it was awash with humanity, most of which were drinking Real Ale. Almost enough room for everyone, plenty of tables and chairs although many seemed to be happy standing. It was very noisey, all loud merry voices shouting above each other.
Two interconnecting rooms with no wall between them, a bar runs along the whole lefthand side of the front room, it continues on into the slightly higher backroom. Handpulls differ in each half/room.
The staff just about managing to cope, poured what I asked for and smiled, too busy for a chat but friendly enough. The beer quality was good and we liked the place, to crowded for a good look round. We had made a special effort to get here, as we had been told it had a good selection of Real Ales and was a real pub (unlike some places in London). We will go again if in that area of London, but it isn’t really a place I’d take a visiting beer geek from outside the UK. Plenty of easier accessible places to show off Real Ale in London | | lassem (31), Copenhagen, Denmark | | March 26, 2012 Fine beer place in London. Dropped by for a few beers. The tap list holds a few comercial beers and a lot of minor local London craft brews. The Night I was there i wresled down a few from Brodies, Kernel and Redemption. Holds a Nice mixed crowd and serve the best bar food i’ve seen for quite some time. Defenately a place worth visiting...more than once. | | imdownthepub (164), Banbury, England | | February 25, 2012 Old style Public House just of the City Road, there are two quite distinct areas, we prefer the front bar on the Baldwin street end. There was an unfortunate incident with the bargirl who prefered to serve her regulars who were stood behind me, quite rude, but other than that all very reasonable. The food is hearty enough, the beer is very decent and varied. Good stuff. | | shoulderbroken (60), Tokyo, Japan | | October 19, 2011 Nice pub with a good selection. Decor is pleasantly traditional with a good mix of people there. Service was quick and polite, and good prices, especially for the area. Food looked good, but didn’t see the menu. Big range of Kernel bottles priced from £3.95 to £4.40 I think, which seems pretty good to me. Also bottles from Camden Town and Redchurch. Will definitely be going back here. Shame it’s not open at the weekend. | | Brugmansia (32), Jylland, Denmark | | October 4, 2011 A cozy, smaller city pub, very nice and quiet pub, only open weekdays. Now and then they have a smaller festival, where they then have a range of beers from one brewery. Last we visited it was Saltaire.
They have a big aquarium, which is nice looking at while enjoying the beer. It is possible to eat here as well, traditionel pub food and pizza´s, very nice.
They have a very friendly staff, they make you feel very velcome, the beers are well served and in good condition. | | JohnRMurdoch (208), Glasgow, Scotland | | March 25, 2011 [ Updated March 26, 2011 ] Busy traditional bar close to Old Street Underground just round the corner from Moorfields Eye Hospital. Interesting well cared for ales on tap. Satisfactory service reasonable prices. Not far from Wenlock Arms. | | mym (14), London, England | | February 16, 2011 Good range of beers, well kept. Nondescript interior. Ok penultimate stop for any crawl ending at The Wenlock Arms just up the road. | | Leighton (226), London, England | | November 26, 2010 Awesome pub. I’ve been here three times for their beer festival. The setup is classic British pub. Plenty of seating, lots of beer ephemera, dim lighting, worn wood. The beer selection was great when I was there, what with the festival and everything. On a normal day it looked like they would have eight cask ales going. Prices were good, service was kind and attentive. Will return for sure. | | tdtm82 (61), , England | | November 25, 2010 Really nice refrained boozer. Classic English style. Really nice laid back atmosphere. No arrogance. No attitude. The beer festivals are good. Not too expensive and honest. Just what you want in a taditional boozer. Good range of Brew Dog beers in bottle condition. Nice cask ales. Lots of emphasis of micros and this is something I always respect. | | nate2g (320), Marlborough, New Zealand | | June 25, 2010 Busy pub in a side street off City Road. A solid cask range and beers are kept well. A few taps of common swill but by no means the worst I’ve seen. Staff are friendly and simple pub fare on offer. A good old fashioned boozer that fits in well with Wenlock Arms not far away. |
