39 reviews for Steve’s Liquor and More
| zizzybalubba (33), Elizabeth City, North Carolina | | August 11, 2009 Stopped in to Steve’s Liquor the morning before GTMW. The service was excellent as both of the people working made sure I was helped and gave me some great suggestions on beers I should try. The overall selection is not as good as Woodman’s but there are some beers to be found here that I did not see at Woodman’s. Prices were a little higher here than I saw at Woodman’s. In a nutshell, this is the place to go to find what you cannot find in Woodman’s. Compared to the other smaller stores I visited in Madison this was the best. | | guyinchicago (18), marengo, Illinois | | July 19, 2009 I checked out this place here on ratebeer before we left house along with rileys these were the two stops me and the wife were going to make on our little day trip to madison both places were rated almost dead even but I know which one is better now. singles selection was weak in quality even on locals but I’ve rated a ton of new glarus brews so i was really looking for central waters and tyranena along with some other brews I can’t get in chicagoland they did have oskar blues in single cans capitol ,lake louie and ale asylum but I was looking for the best of what wisconsin has to offer and was quite dissapointed i did buy a mixed 6 pk. that cost me 15 and change if your cruising on us 12 stop in,it is very close to highway the staff was freindly and they did break a 6er of devil dancer for me but that cost $19.99 back home at Binnys it was $17.99 but the other 5 were average at best just as the store was | | Scubatrip (27), Winston-Salem, North Carolina | | January 6, 2009 I stopped in here on a business trip to Madison to pick up a couple good beers for the football game. I thought it was a pretty good selection, but I’m from out-of-State, so "good selection" means "beers I can’t get in NC." That is to say, I’ve been in beer stores with larger selections, but this was still pretty good. The prices, again, are relative, but there were many good beers for not a lot of money. The coolers are numbered for easy reference, and there’s a pretty good selection of wine and liquor just in case beer isn’t enough for the night. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and were familiar with the beers they did have. When I said I was from out of town, the guy became quite concerned that I be able to enjoy my beers, so he threw in a free bottle opener. A small gesture, of course, but one that will enusre my repeat business whenever I’m in town. | | Strykzone (40), Wood River, Illinois | | August 20, 2008 Stopped in on the Saturday morning on the huge beer fest weekend. They were very busy but service was outstanding. Don’t know his name, but he was from Australia and he was great. I wanted to buy LOTS of Wisconsin beers in singles and Steves had them in spades. I was delighted with the assortment. Only looked briefly for out of state brews and ended up with some Stone and others. Wow, did I spend some money there! Didn’t shop around so I have no idea about pricing, but the variety was excellent and singles available were right up my alley. | | GJF (22), Cedar Rapids, Iowa | | July 14, 2008 Drove up from Iowa to check it out. It’s in a nice section of town, easy to get to. The beer selection is quite nice, Bear Republics and Lagunitas that I have some trouble finding, for instance. It gets really crowded though and someone needs to get rid of the obnoxious woman hawking beer at the front of the store. | | notalush (157), Denver, Colorado | | June 23, 2008 I made a special trip to come to this place when I was in town, as it is well-rated, and I have to say that I was not all that impressed - the cooler section dedicated to craft beer was small, even compared to lesser wisconsin stores (see - Timers in Racine) - sure, they have most WI brewers represented, but so does every other store in the state, and their selection of out of state micros was actually quite small, as was the import selection (one small cooler for ALL imports, including Canadian ones) - this place gets an extra point or two for being the only store I went to in the state that had a few Lake Louie products, but aside from that there is nothing here that you can’t get in a decent liquor store in any medium-sized town/city in the state (ie. Appleton, etc.). | | CMUBEERMAN (49), Madison, Wisconsin | | May 13, 2008 [ Updated September 19, 2009 ] This is the better location...Jan is ridiculous. This place blew my mind when I first drove up from chicago....now that I live here...the selection isn’t as mind blowing...but they will make an effort to get what you want...and they pretty much get more than their fair share of anything that comes to wisconsin. I wouldn’t be an overstatement that Jan has the best chance of getting what you want in all of WI. The wine selection is also probably the best in madison. | | esjaygee (103), Oak Creek, Wisconsin | | May 11, 2008 Decent liquor store in a nice area of Madison. A lot of wines are sold in the middle of the store but there’s a decent selection of beer in the cooler along the wall. Some of the local stuff is broken into singles, but most stuff is available as six packs only. Lots of Wisconsin brewers plus others like Bells, Lagunitas, etc. My main knock on the store is that the prices were a bit high. They did offer a 10% discount on a make your own six pack. | ATLBeerDog (4), Atlanta, Georgia does not count - explanation | | May 1, 2008 This place rocks! Jan was off the day I was there, but it did not matter. Karen and Mike were incredibly helpful. The selection was awesome. So many beers that are not available in IL and certainly not Georgia. Lots of super small Wisconsin breweries. New Glarus, Tyranena, Capital, Central Waters, Furthermore, Sprecher, Cross Plains, Lake Louie, Lakefront, among others. Mix a six was also very nice!
Location on Madison’s Westside, conveniently located off Highway 14 and just a 2 hour drive from Chicago’s Northern Suburbs.
| | rudolf (67), Buffalo, New York | | April 18, 2008 I stopped in on a recent trip to Madison. A great selection of Wisconsin beers, albeit most of them only available in 6 packs. I did grab singles of 6 or 7 New Glarus beers as well as some Central Waters Barrel Aged beers. The woman working was nice enough to split a 4 pack of New Glarus Quad for me even though it wasn’t in the system. The selection of non-WI beers wasn’t extremely exciting for someone from Buffalo, NY but I was there for the WI beers!BRBR
