First visit, August 2016. Iím not sure why I took so long to finally check out this place, but there it is. I had gone to the old JT Whitneys a few times in the middle of the last decade - mixed feelings about that place, not really surprised it died, because Madison is getting pretty competitive for beer and brewpubs. Anyway this newer place strikes me as an improvement overall, though Iím a bit tentative in my enthusiasm over both service and beer. No complaints about the ambiance - theyíve done all they possibly can to make a 90s-era "family restaurant" building look cool, dark and comfortable and pub-y. Dark enough that you may have trouble reading the beer menu or writing stuff down if youíre at the bar, actually. I had 6 samples or pints - out of the 17 they had on - and every other one was meh while the other half were all good or at least interesting. Food: I just had the pretzels, not going to give a rating based on those; I will say that the menu looks just OK, not as creative as some of my other semi-local brewpubs. As to the service - I think I got there right at changeover time; my first bartender seemed distracted (others near me were also somewhat ignored), but half an hour later there were fresh servers who were paying a bit more attention. I should also note that prices arenít listed on the beer menu, and single samples can be over 4.00 for some strong beers. So overall - mixed to positive on one visit. There will certainly be more.
Large brewpub on the southside of town with ample parking. Large bar and lots of seating. Surprisingly slow on a Saturday(possibly due to being here in summer). Large selection of beers including some unusual styles. A great place.
07-04-2015 - Good size bar seating with TV, outside seating and quite spacey inside. The service was good and very attentive. The food menu presents a large selection. I had a very good burger that was cooked precisely the way I ordered it. The beers are hit and miss. Five (5) beers per flight that are each 5oz. pours. Overall, the beers were lacking aroma and flavor for the ones that I ordered. This establishment is worth checking out and is an establishment that I would check out again.
More of a restaurant feel to this place, central bar, a bit dark inside. Tons of beers on offer, all were so-so with a few stand-outs (stout was tasty). They had two special releases just out the day we visited that were big, boozy barrel aged things. Food was tasty and creative.
(Visited 08/2014): Vintage Brewing Company is located in Madison on Whitney Way in front of a shopping plaza. Itís not too far off the Beltline and there is ample parking around the building.
The interior is laid out like a family restaurant, with well-worn booth and table seating in multiple rooms. The wraparound bar is located in the center of the main room and features a huge fish tank.
The brewpub features 20 handles, all but one of them Vintage beers. On our visit the selection included many year-round offerings like a Stout, a couple IPAs, Velouria Belgian, and Pils. Some more unique offerings like Cabernet Barrel-aged Jinja Ninja, Polotmavy Incorrect and Rye Whiskey Barrel Dedication. The beers were decent on the whole with a couple throwaways but a few standouts too. Sample sizes are available.
Service at the bar on a weekday early evening was good. The bartenders were attentive in bringing rounds and were knowledgeable about the beer.
We did not have food on the visit.
Overall this is a pretty solid and well-established brewpub in Madison and is worth checking out.
First trip to Vintage was in September. Had their Pumpkin Disorderly, which you can only get there. Fantastic beer! Got a growler to take home. Food was good, but I only had an appetizer. Iím sure if I went there hungry, Iíd be happy. But I had more to drink that day. Service was great. I will be back!
An awesome brewpub in Madison. Located in a strip mall setting. Inside, it is a pretty cool place, very spacious. There is a fish tank behind the bar. Also lots of vintage memorabilia and a section of chairs/couches that look like they are from the 60s. They had some interesting beers on tap - a grodz, polotmavy, pumpkin ale, spiced pepper beer, brett BSA, etc. They also feature several Woodshed beers (I believe they brew for them?) - the coffee stout was great. And they have maybe 8 guest taps, mostly local WI beers. Standard pub menu - my lime chicken caesar salad was great. This is a place you can (and I did) spend awhile in. Highly recommended.
I should preface this by saying that my experience was probably uncommon because I came here with kids - I do not often bring my kid (let alone someone elseís kid) to a brewpub, but I checked out the website and noticed they had a kids menu, so I assumed the place was fine to bring kids to (they also had crayons and coloring pages, so in principle, they seemed cool with kids) - however, the hostess seemed annoyed that we were bringing children in (god forbid we bring kids in at 1pm on a Friday), even though they behaved just fine - the waitress also did not seem thrilled and, to make matters worse, the staff did not pay us much mind and the food took forever to get to our table (several tables around us came in later and had their food before we did) - anyway, I was pretty perturbed by my experience in this respect - to the other stuff - this is in a strip mall area in west Madison, right off the belt line, so easy access from the highway - dark and cave-like inside - they have a lot of old kitch and other crap all over the place - an obvious attempt to make it look like and old midwest neighborhood bar - it doesnít really work - the beer selection was quite varied, with a lot of interesting styles and variations - quality, however, was just so-so - nothing bad, but nothing that wowed me - the food was average in price but was actually quite tasty (despite the fact that it took forever to get to us) - overall, even if I had had stellar service, I would have found this place merely okay - the vibe, service, and quality had me thinking, "This is the most highly-rated brewery in Madison?" - itís an okay spot, but certainly not worthy of itís current rating (92/100).
