| EricSisson (11), Harrisburg, Pennsylvania | | April 4, 2012 It is nice to have beer available in a grocery store in PA! They also do let you mix and match a six pack from a selection of beers. | FishBizkit (5), Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | March 5, 2012 Grocery store with a great cafe food selection, and a great beer selection. The beer prices are reasonable for 6ers. Singles are a bit pricey, but not too bad. Food is expensive. | BcOneSeven (4), Newville, Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | March 3, 2012 For PA, this is a stellar selection and a stellar service. It is nice to buy singles and sixes. Fortunately, in free states this is the norm. It is unfortunate that in PA this is special. But thanks Wegman's for making it happen. | HoopTime (6), Camp Hill, Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | January 16, 2012 Beer in a grocery store is a new concept in Pa. The state does not allow it, but Wegmans, and now some other chains following their lead, take advantage of a "loophole" by operating a restaurant in one corner of the store, selling beer with a restaurant license. Although they justify this by saying they look to offer beer to people having dinner there, the truth it this is all about takeout. The good news is, we now have a place with a very good selection of craft beers to buy sixers and bombers. The selection is pretty good; heavy on Rogues, Dogfish Head, Stone and regional Pa. and NY offerings such as Troegs, Weyerbacher and Southern Tier. Mix-sixes are reasonably priced and although they don’t advertise it, are not limited to the selections on the individual bottles shelf near the cooler (or those in the coolers). They will allow you to include beers from sixes on the shelves, too. Not sure if they intend it this way, but from the missing bottles in sixes that you encounter, it appears they don’t distinguish between placing higher priced offerings, such as Dogfish Head stuff that comes in 4-packs, from the rest when it comes to mixing. Although the selection does not change much as far as whet breweries are available, they do rotate the offerings from those breweries to include seasonals. A downside to their selection is that being a large corporate store, they have little local flexibility. All additions to the inventory must get home office approvals. Also, some very good news -- according to one of the chefs in their cafe (cafeteria style, mostly carryout food), plans are in the works to almost double the size of their beer selection, which he tells me will allow them to increase their selection. | | BeerHawk (52), Huntsville, Alabama | | January 16, 2012 Decent selection for a grocery store. Singles, sixers, cases, 22’s, 750’s,mix your own sixers. Approximately 70% at room temp, 30% in coolers. Some items I only found in the cooler area. I was at this location a few days before Christmas so it was very busy and the staff appeared somewhat overwhelmed. Prices were sporadic, some items had decent prices, and others were overpriced. | | nike (36), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | September 6, 2011 A grocery store, very similar to Giant Eagle located here in Pittsburgh. A decent selection of beers, mostly local Troegs, Lancaster, Victory, and Stoudts. Nothing unusual here. For the most part, prices are high especially on a local Pittsburgh macro IC Light and IC Light Mango which they are selling as craft and asking $4 / bottle. "C’mon Man" Don’t assk staff any questions, there have no idea about the beers. | | Nejhleader (68), Lemoyne, Pennsylvania | | August 17, 2009 [ Updated March 28, 2010 ] a rare site in PA, to have a grocery store with beer. price is perhaps a bit high for most things, selection is fairly good. | | f351c4v (77), Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania | | August 9, 2009 Yes, a grocery store in the locked down, narrow minded Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that sells beer. Of course, this is only possible due to the fact that Wegmans purchased a liquor license for their Marketplace Cafe, located within the grocery store. Anyway, a nice variety of six packs and single bottles available for carry out. Some micro examples: Many varieties of Sam Adams, DFH, Victory, Weyerbacher, Troegs, Anchor, Stone, etc. V12 and Wild Devil in 750’s for $8.50! It’s like we live in AMERICA!!! Also a decent Belgian selection - Chimay, Corsendonk, DT, a few varieties of Lindeman’s, in both 375 and 750’s... just don’t expect anything rare. Imports include the usual suspects - Heineken, Becks, Spaten, Sam Smith, Guinness and Co. Prices are hit or miss; Lindeman’s ~$10 for a 750, but $12 for a 6 pack of DFH IBA or 60 min IPA?? I’m not complaining, just glad to see beer in the grocery store, where it belongs. Hopefully this starts a trend... it’s in a nice setting; there’s a fresh food bar nearby and a cafe where you can enjoy your brew, if you wish. Store workers are mildly helpful, but enthusiastic about their selection, at least. Worth a stop if you’re in the area and you wish to see how beer is purchased in the rest of the United States of America; a mini-vacation right here on the west shore! |
