| BriSava (77), , Japan | | December 21, 2011 On a superficial level, very really great prices.
Westvleteren Blond: 3.4 Eur, Westvleteren Extra: 3.6 Eur, Westvleteren Abt: 3.9 Eur.
Bur if you order bottled beer, then you receive ONLY GLASS WHICH IS SERVED BEER, not bottle itself, this is the fake. Someone received St. Bernardus in spite of Westvletern and the master could not display the bottle.
My friends who ordered Berliner Weisse but he received belgian wheat ale which is served Berliner Weisse glass and the master also could not display the bottle.
Is this master’s silent enjoyment (Stillen Genieter) ?
It’s just a cheat and that’s the last thing you should do. So you should be careful not to be taken in him. | | minist (10), , England | | August 17, 2011 Really great prices here - opening seems a bit random, was about 20:15 when we got in. The owner was cool, like a quiet beer santa. Westvleteren at realistic prices, and a great selection in general - well worth a visit! | jebbe (3), Malmö, Sweden does not count - explanation | | July 12, 2011 Better selection than it seems. You can get hold of vintage bottles of gueuze etc. that isn’t on the menu. Place is nasty in a nice way, staff is friendly and a visit is highly reccomended.Only downside is that it’s facing an annoying nightclub. | | txspartan (29), Wilrijk, Belgium | | June 1, 2011 Though it takes a while at times to actually get what you’ve ordered, Den Stille has quite an awesome selection of beers and is a must visit for any serious taster. | | Travlr (637), Washington, Washington DC | | September 15, 2010 Terrific place just near the center of Mechelen. Long and narrow, lots of bits and bobs hanging from the ceiling. Looks well-worn and lived-in. Friendly and helpful staff. Can get smoky, which is the only negative. Beer list is extensive, and although a few beers were out, they had all the Trappists (yes, all) at amazing prices (best I’ve seen in Belgium). Definitely worth going far out of your way to visit. | | JAS1944 (11), Stourbridge, England | | July 26, 2010 Den Stillen has a huge selection of beer at very reasonable prices, perhaps it’s the child labour – we were served by a nine year old who was still working when we left at midnight!
| | madthom8 (52), Twickenham, England | | January 21, 2010 [ Updated January 31, 2010 ] Visited October 2009. I went here twice during my stay in Mechelen. Lots of young people on my first visit, including the fellow who served me who looked all of 16. Went with a friend on the second visit, and we shared four 750ml bottles of some very nice dark beer. Lots of character to the place and the landlord. Selection is very good. Situated across the canal from the old Lamot brewery and very near the Vismarkt, where you can try the Fanterlok Restaurant for excellent all-you-care-to-eat ribs and the Ankertje cafe for the full line-up of Anker beers. | | chriso (258), London, England | | March 30, 2009 Cosy little place. The owner wasn’t there when we arrived and the place seemed to be entirely staffed by one young guy who seemed a bit flustered and bewildered when we took a while to go through the 300+ beer list. It was worth it though as we found a couple of rare krieks on the list - De Neve and Vanderlinden Vieux Foudre - at knock down prices. Then he disappeared to find them for what seemed like an age and I was entirely prepared for him to return without them. However, show up they did. Obviously pretty aged but both labels were in such an advanced state of decay that they were entirely iilegible, so I guess it could have been anything that he gave me. Later the chap who I took to be the owner did turn up and he didn’t seem nearly as grumpy as I had been led to believe. No substantial food as far as I could determine. Definitely worth a visit. | | oberabcbbsok (38), Hoboken, Belgium | | May 9, 2007 [ Updated August 29, 2008 ] A pub specialized in large bottles. Still has some beers you never heard of it. Very small pub, the only problem is the opening hours. Not always sure if it is open or not | | Hunsell (43), Amsterdam, Netherlands | | February 14, 2007 An absolute GEM. A hidden treasure in a small city that is already worth visiting, not only for beerpurposes. Hard to find, the hours vary alot because the owner opens his bar when you ring the bell (after dinnertime). Funny interior with cafetarialike tables and chairs, but with a natural cosiness. Great beerlist, many surprises and incredibly low prices. As soon as the evening continued, the place was packed with lots of youngsters. A mustvisit when in Belgium, don’t miss it. |
