| lefossoyeur (10), Montreal, Quebec | | March 8, 2012 Really old tavern that has recently doubled its size while keeping the good vibe of the old place. Can get very dark at night to sample beer but the athmosphere is really great. Music is often really good too with a wide range selection wich I do appreciate. Service is really good if you know the bartender, but can be somteimes atrocious when the bartender is more drunk than the people sitting in front of his/her bar. Their beer selection is quite good, really good selection of imports that focuses more on quality than quantity. Often seen there are DeMolen rarities, Struise brouwers, Cantillon, 3 Fonteinen, The Bruery, Hornbeer and many more interesting stuff. Food is not the highlight here but their cheddar grill cheese is totally sufficient to stuff your belly for another round of beer. Overall, a must in MTL with DDC, Brouhaha and Benelux, and defenitely the best brewpub in town to party in. | | sseb69 (21), Gatineau, Quebec | | February 17, 2012 Vieille taverne comme je les aime. Excellent service ce jour là. 8 fûts et plusieurs bouteilles. Je vais devoir y aller lors de ma prochaine visite. | | jorondo (10), , | | January 19, 2012 Great ambiance, nice people, and an incredible array of beers, lots of different styles and a lot of new stuff every time I go there. | | Radek Kliber (72), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Poland | | December 23, 2011 This place improved a lot in recent years. They do care more for customers. Good beers on tap. OK table service. | | bedainedebiere (34), Terrebonne, Quebec | | September 3, 2011 A very welcoming place, quite well located. 8 to 10 of their beers on tap, some of them being most interesting (Saisons, IPA, Imperial Stout, Bauweraerts...). Rather small but well-selected offering of imported beers, most being unavailable in Québec (unless you buy a whole 150$ case that you’ve waited 4 months for...). Excellent service. To me, this place in the Top 4 on the Montréal brewpub scene (with DDC, L’Amère à Boire and Benelux, all located in a mile and a half radius; that’s why I live in the boring suburbs: I’d have no strenght to endure such temptation if I’d live close from there!). | | TheJester (33), Peterborough, Ontario | | July 20, 2011 Looks like a strip club. Chrome and brass and plush carseat curtains and mirrors. A limited selection of bottles, but the ones they have are very good. Not cheap, but I’ve never seen some of these anywhere else. Their own beers are soso. Service is decent and friendly. One guy working and there were 20-25 people in the place. Didn’t try the food. | | mr23528 (10), Quebec | | November 30, 2010 As Montreal’s oldest brewpub, this place is still a classic. Not always the best beers in the city, but when they’re on, they’re bang on. Great ambiance and service. Definitely worth the visit. Also, an interesting but limited selection of imported specialty beers. | | JulienHuxley (64), Trois-Rivieres, Quebec | | November 7, 2010 This place has a bit of a creepy ambiance because of the deco, but it is very relaxed and enjoyable overall. They have a very good selection of both house beers and imports (including some american micros). The staff was helpful and the place was far from being too crowded when we went there on a saturday night. I really enjoyed it. | | DerWeg (27), Toronto, Ontario | | November 6, 2010 Generally on par with the area, you have to walk a little east of lower St Denis but the short hike is worth it. Always a fun vibe and I like the feel of the place. I had some questionable or green-tasting beers in the hot busy July season (rushed maturation?) however more recent visits proved the beer excellent when they do it right. I did lean to the exotic rather than ’standard’ CB beers. I had a hot press sandwich that was entirely acceptable bar food, and the bar-side service is attentive and friendly, I brought and/or met chatty people there, like most places.
They do offer some quite expensive import bottles which would be fun too. Some prices were nuts (La Chouffe available locally, here marked up what 250% before tax and tip - just bad for image of Canadian bars). However other cool stuff like Jolly Pumpin and others would be hard to find otherwise - I leave that out of value equation. |
