A great place to visit while in Munich. It has that real Bavarian feel. The place is packed full of people, especially during the football game night. It’s a must do in Munich to treat yourself to a 1l glass of beer together with some typcial Bavarian cuisine. Awesome.

A very nice bierhall that really knows how to lure in the tourists. The place is massive and is dripping with ’German drinking culture’. The range of beers is somewhat small but that’s to be expected. In the evenings this place only serves their beers (well, MOST of their beers, save the weisse) in one-liter glasses, which is a bit of a ball-ache if you’re doing a crawl around Munich. (I gather they do smaller pours during the day.) It’s worth visiting this place just to take in the surroundings but I wouldn’t spend much time here.

Been here a couple of times. You can’t beat it for the atmosphere. No better place in Munich to enjoy a stein of beer. Well, apart from the Englischer garten on a hot summers day!
The staff all wear standard Bavarian dress and there’s an ooompah band. Food is excellent too.

Amazingly huge traditional beer house. It only serves HB beers but you dont go there in order to try new beers. You go there to be part of the beer history of Munich. Amazing food, decent prices and excellent entertainment shows (Bavarian bands). Man I had a great time there...

I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this place. We ate upstairs and enjoyed the food and the beer. Then we joined in the tourist throng on the main floor and enjoyed it immensely. I would prefer quite of few other places in Munich, but you have to experience this place at least once.

Place was packed- not surprisingly since it was the day before Oktoberfest began. A band playing traditional music, lots of long tables, throngs of people chatting. The upstairs was a bit more tame and seemed like more the place for eating than the downstairs. The inner cortyard seemed nice, but again, the massive crowed killed any atmosphere it may have had. You must be at a table to order beer- meaning there is no bar to order from. Was very neat to see, but not really the place I would go for a drink or a bite.

Visited September 2012.
This was near the end of day two in München. The first night at Oktoberfest we weren’t able to get into the Hofbräuhaus tent (actually the only one we couldn’t get into). The actual restaurant certainly did not disappoint but like any German pub they only carry a couple of beers, most of which are only available by the half liter and full liter. There was a band playing which much like the music at Oktoberfest was very repetitive with a 5 song play list. Those songs aren’t even full songs either. Oh well. We had a great time sitting across the table from two Americans from Oklahoma that were doing a similar trip to us (though they had gone into Norway after Sweden). The old German lady next to us was having a good time with a few half liters as well. Service is really freaking slow but nice otherwise and were happy to bring as much beer as we needed, which meant buying full liters knowing it would be a while before the next round arrived.

It’s an institution, no question about that. Have a look inside, but there is no particular need to linger. Their beers are just the same as in the other beer halls of the six big breweries in Munich.

Hofbrauhaus was a great time. I was aware that Ayinger has a great reputation, and Ayinger beer is great, but this was a place I couldn’t miss. We were lucky to find space a long table next to the musicians. A group of Swiss guys joined us and we had a great time chatting with them about beer. I asked if they knew of Bon Chien, and they recommended Feldschlosschen. Loud and noisy, and ok food ( didn’t feel great after the bratwurst, but this was a great experience. Everyone needs to go here once. Service is lacking but friendly enough. A large selection, for Germany. Expensive beer.
