nice beer garden out back. There’s self service outdoors. Nice and peaceful apart from the wasps. Worth visiting, it’s a little oasis of peace with good Bavarian beer

The Hofbräukeller has been billed as a family-friendly neighbourhood alternative to the insanity that is the world-famous Hofbräuhaus in the city centre. Or perhaps I’m just making this up as I attempt to balance my pad and paper with my glorious Mass of Hell. At any rate, I decided to check it out for myself on a warm Tuesday evening in July 2011. I didn’t bother with the fairly large Keller restaurant, and confined myself to the outdoor biergarten in the back. Wow! Fresh Hofbräu Helles in a 1 litre stein for about 7 Euros. A large and pretty packed garden full of folks enjoying the nectar under a small forest of chestnut trees. And the spareribs! I’m always partial to a German beergarden that offers spareribs, and a surprising number of them do. The ribs at the Hofbräukeller are massive, fatty, fall-off-the-bone pork beauties accompanied by a generous puddle of spicy bbq sauce. Even without the food, however, the ambience of the garden and the taste of the beer makes this one of my favourite beer gardens anywhere. Serivce here is somewhat abrupt, and the beer guy almost tosses the steins at you as if he was at a five-pin bowling lane, but the patrons here (most of them locals) are happy and the kiddies at the thoughtfully-included playground are shrieking in a good way. And I’m happy to be in a Munich biergarten again, and this one deserves a spot on any list of Munich’s best. It’s easy to find - just take the U4 or U5 metro to Max-Weber-Platz and make your way south-west on Innere Wiener Strasse. Highly Recommended.
