| ALLOVATE (84), Butler, WA, Australia | | February 5, 2012 [ Updated February 6, 2012 ] Stopped in here for a quick bevvie whiched turned into three or so. Located across from the Bayerische Staatsoper and the monumental and jovially mocking statue Max Joseph Denkmal, a tribute to King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria. It also stands besides an intersection renowned for bicycle accidents as manic commuters move to and thro’ along Max-Joseph-Platz, so sitting out on the sidewalk is a must. Typically refined new world timber framed restaurant, very tidy, whitewalled and laden with stuffed animal heads. Very neat, upperclass almost as far as beer related places in Munich go. Seemed more a fine diner inside and a coffee house from out. Menu is a blend of modern German, meets Italian bistro with a little influences from further abroad. Nice beer list, mostly bottled, with Beck’s on draught (?). The wine list is impressive though. The price is not much to whinge about given the prices of cafe’s located just a hop, skip and jump away in Munich’s version of Rodeo Drive. Overall friendly service, but lacking in the fun frenzy of other Munich places to see. | hrabren (9), Zagreb, Croatia does not count - explanation | | December 25, 2010 A very nice place close to the Opera house (hence the name), thus the visitors are mostly artists and members of the opera audience. They have a nice variety of beers, the food is good, not to expensive. There is a Franziskaner Beer Hall nearby but it is not worth a visit, rather stick to this warm place. | | 3fourths (962), Boulder, Colorado | | June 10, 2008 Located on Max-Joseph-Platz in front of the National Theatre, it’s your typical Munich brauhaus with a nicely designed glossy, polished old world interior along with the obligatory sidewalk dining area. Draft beer includes Spaten Hell (Pils) vom fass, a few selections from the Franziskaner line as well as the Lowenbrau line (Triumphator dunkler doppelbock!). Patio seating is nice, but of course it’s mostly tourists... but being a little off the main tourist road the prices are just slightly below outrageous... still quite high, but not ridiculous like the places around the Marienplatz. Food prices are also a bit on the high side... 13-15 euro for schnitzel when the rural spots in Bavaria charge you 6 euro. Across/down the road is Zum Franziskaner. |
