| mansquito (32), washington, Washington DC | | March 27, 2011 So this place was apparently a lot better, but I was never there before, so I can only talk about how it is now. It is mostly dedicated to American Micros. There is generally something there that I never had before. Ultimately, going there on Happy Hour is the best time because you get all the beers for $3.25. Sometimes there are exceptions to this and the price does not go down. Staff doesn’t know much about beer, but were attentive. Fortunately, anybody on this site does know quite a lot about beer and is as a result, able to compensate. Ambience is a little lame, but I like the fact that it is well lighted and not obscenely loud. Food is lame Tex-Mex, but I never go there to eat. | | masticesj (10), New Jersey | | August 8, 2010 Great Place... If your hanging in the city, it’s worth a couple of hours! | | basspro76 (16), New York | | June 21, 2010 Great vibe as you walk in during a summers night as the front is complety open and the dimly lit interior sets a nice mood. Bartender knew his shit and the selection was immense. Even have a nice little beer and liquor menu to help you with your choices. Crowd is young and artsy. Coolest thing about the bar is a chalkboard in which anyone can change the saying for $2. Didn’t have the food but from the looks of other tables it seemed like standard pub fare. | | tgncc (49), Bellmore, New York | | April 16, 2010 This place is out of the way, 4 long blocks from the nearest subway. The ambiance is nice, clean, well lit, attractive. The service is slow, even with a handful of people in the bar. The bar staff did not seem to have a solid knowledge of beer in general, or even the beers they were serving. The selection is usually good, but of course not the equal of Blind Tiger or Rattle n Hum. The food appeared to be decent, although I actually didn’t have any. The value for happy hour is usually decent, with $4 pints (a steal for manhattan). The event beer are outrageously overpriced. Not a bad place. I’ll probably give it another shot to see if my impression of the place improves. | | zdk (79), New York, New York | | April 15, 2010 Went (finally) for the Kuhnhenn event. Good selection, but nothing like Blind Tiger or Rattle. I thought everything was overpriced except maybe the Kuhnhenn stuff was ok. Service was painfully slow. We had table service and it 20 minutes for them to serve us one beer. Ludicrous. It was nice to actually get a table on an event night at a New York city bar, so props for that, I guess. Probably won’t go back unless they have another event. | | ben4321 (117), Hoboken, New Jersey | | February 16, 2010 I like this place, I know they don’t necessarily get the rare stuff that places like RnH and Blind Tiger get, but they get some interesting stuff, and it is a hell of a lot easier to get a seat and relax and enjoy a pint. Service has always been good on my visits both at the bar and tables. Prices are decent, not great, but alright, and they discount during HH. I’ll continue to visit this bar. Food is pretty darn good as well. | | vtafro (24), Wayne, New Jersey | | January 10, 2010 Had heard that this place used to be awesome. But it seems like it has gone slightly down hill, tap selection was less than great, a couple taps were interesting in the normal room, while the Belgian bar was expensive and limited in bottles and choices on draft. Some rarer stuff but not impossible to find. Watch out bottle i had purchased was probably a year or two old, for an imperial red that just can’t happen. | | yemenmocha (66), Glendale, Arizona | | November 12, 2009 Mexican style place that has a great selection of craft beers, both domestic and imported. It was odd that there weren’t Mexican beers on tap given the bar’s theme, but oh well.
Servers were more of the young/cute female stereotype that knew little about the craft offerings. Luckily they have a little binder with laminated pages about their beers, and they’re generous with little samples so that your choice is the right one. Prices were reasonable for NYC and it’s close to d.b.a. if you’re making the trip to the East Village. Did not try the food on my visit. | | WeeHeavySD (111), San Diego (Hillcrest), California | | August 3, 2009 Been here a few times, and I remember when it was Stingy lu lus. I’ll prob stop for a beer this trip. It was a cool place relatively speaking when I last went. | | JoeMcPhee (398), Toronto, ON, Ontario | | June 7, 2009 Updated rating...man, this place has fallen apart. Faux Tex-Mex decor with a much shorter beer list than they once hosted. Food is pretty poor and the service in here has really fallen off substantially. I pop in occasionally to see what’s on tap, and there are still sometimes a few new things, but this is a shell of the beer mecca it once was. If you’re going to rebrand yourself, you might want to at least change the name... WTF does "Hop Devil Grill" have to do with tequila?
Yeah, this place was awesome. Located in one of the cooler spots in the city. Very nice tap list and an even larger number of bottles. The Belgian room was pricey but I got my hands on a bottle of Drie Fonteinen Schaerbeek (tasty). The food was well done and very well priced, a burger, salad/fries, and a pint of any domestic draught for 10 bucks is a good deal anywhere, especially when the tap list is as good as this one. Great place to people watch as well.
