| JoeMcPhee (398), Toronto, ON, Ontario | | May 29, 2011 This place is great! Beautiful old inn with lots of wood detailing over plaster walls. The front pub area reminded me of the Turf Tavern in Oxford - low ceilings, dark wood and all. A warren of rooms throughout the front area. The back area dining room is a bit less quaint, but is still lovely. The service is incredibly effiicient. We were served drinks in under a minute and our food came out 5-6 minutes after we ordered. A decent tap selection although it’s not overly adventurous. Come here for the ambience - a great spot for a pint if/when you get tired of all the wine in Niagara. | | cfrancis (58), Ottawa, Ontario | | April 15, 2011 Quaint old pub that’s been around almost 200 years! Three brews made for them that are average. London Pride on tap! Amsterdam Two-fisted. Great service. Would go again. | | cratez (100), London, Ontario | | October 29, 2010 [ Updated February 21, 2011 ] My girl and I came here while spending a weekend in Niagara On The Lake for a friend’s wedding. This pub - which I’ve heard is Ontario’s oldest - is located just off the town’s main drag, behind the courthouse and close to the local LCBO. As such, it is absolutely flooded with tourists, but it still manages to exude a pleasant and warming character.
Atmosphere is classic English pub with dark wood tables and chairs, a large sit-down bar, and lots of memorabilia hanging on the walls. A display of old tap handles looms over the bar, and I spotted Black Oak’s long-retired Lager among the ’trophies.’
Service was excellent as our waitress was very prompt in getting everything to the table. When I asked her which brewers make the pub’s house beers, she not only answered my question (Great Lakes brews the Amber, while Niagara Brewing makes the Bitter and Pale Lager), but also brought me a flight of 4oz samples of each beer, free of charge! The Bitter was quite good while the Amber and Lager were just okay.
Beer selection includes many solid craft brews and imports. In addition to the house beers, I went with an Amsterdam Two Fisted Stout and also spotted the Belgian Wit, Creemore Springs Lager, Niagara Gritstone Ale, Steam Whistle Pilsner, Upper Canada Lager and Dark Ale, Fuller’s London Pride, and Hobgoblin on tap. As well, the elusive Old Vienna can be had in bottles.
I don’t remember what my girlfriend ordered for lunch but my bangers and mash paired perfectly with the Stout. Portions are generous and everything is reasonably priced too.
Overall, The Olde Angel Inn is one of the most charming pubs I’ve come across in this province. Although it doesn’t offer an abundance of rare beers, it’s still a lovely place to enjoy a quality pint and hearty meal. If I lived in the Niagara Region, this would be a regular hangout for me. Definitely worth a visit. | | Zenwolf (52), Waterloo, Ontario | | October 7, 2010 Great place. Oldest pub in Uppser Canada.. definate charm and warmth. Not a touristy place.. though packed full of tourists. Its also a place for locals. Good selection of Niagra based beers and a few Macro’s on tap. | | robinvboyer (54), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario | | October 4, 2010 Quaint little pub. NIce old turn of the century house. Extremely friendly staff, and the food was decent. Their own contract beers are passable macro beer, but they have some decent micros on tap from around the province. I would go back for a pint. |
