July 30, 2009 Opened in OKC 20 July 2009. My first visit 28 July. Looks like a small little dive bar, which it is in some ways. But it has a very nice (by OK standards) beer selection with proper glassware and a knowledgeable waitstaff (Hailey). Food is fries--that’s it (hence the name). But there’s a twist--they come with your choice of 17 different dipping sauces ranging from chipotle BBQ to tomato-basil to Thai peanut to mushroom truffle. It really is fun to get a big group and sit around sampling them. But while the fries are fun, the appeal is the beer. While Drunken Fry doesn’t have the selection of McNellies or Tapwerks, the prices are more reasonable and it’s a quieter and much more laid-back vibe. I was disappointed that they allowed smoking (not only will it kill you, it messes up the smell and taste of the beer). Fortunately, on the day I was there, only a couple of people were smoking at the opposite side of the bar, so it wasn’t a huge issue. But if you come on a crowded night, I have a feeling the smoke could get bad (see my dive bar comments above). Parking in this area is scarce, so be prepared to drive around or park and walk if you come on a busy night. While I can come up with a few nitpicky things, at least based on my first trip, Drunken Fry gets two thumbs up as a welcome addition to the OK beer scene. |
