A visit to Ostend is not complete for me without Botteltje. The bottle sign is a trusted sight and reassures me I will have some interesting beers. The atmosphere is brownish but modern and clean, cosy and woody, and quite relaxing if it is not too crowded. Service is always friendly and selection is extensive though exclusively Belgian. I like the menus, which are suspended on hooks at each table and in which new beers are added with stickers - usually the first thing I look for. Some beers in the menu are not available anymore but somehow I always manage to find some regional beer I havenít tasted yet. Prices are on the high side, though. The food varies from good to disappointing - depends on what you order, but I would recommend the mussels during the season. Benefits from being at the seaside, of course, but a valuable beer house in its own right.

More like an English pub. (Well Ostend is a bit like Blackpool) There are a few seats outside, but in the late afternoon they were in the shade.
We returned in the evening and sat inside. Each table has itís own numbered beer book. There are lots of unusual beers all served in their own glass. The waitor told us the history/facts about the beers that we had orderred. Although the football was on TV it wasnít too noisy. The 16 font beers could be bought in taster trays of up to 16 x 15cl. Unfortunately the taps housed run of the mill beers including Guinness.

Visted November 2013. I stayed at the Hotel Marion which is in the same building as the cafe as owned by the same people. CAFE: I went to the cafe twice but only had something the first time. On the first visit I had three beers: the draught Keyte Tripel and St Bernardus Tripel were fine but the bottled Verhaeghe Noel was out of date and limp. I didnít bother the busy waiter to get a replacement as he had the whole bar to look after by himself. When I went to pay for the bill I asked if I might charge it to the room but he exasperatingly said I should have said that I wanted to before he did the billing. The next time I went I sat down at a table and had the same waiter scurry up to me and in a brusque manner tell me I couldnít sit there unless I was ordering food. He didnít offer any other place to sit, so I left. There is a large selection of beer to be had. FOOD: I ate a shrimp dish on my first visit which was good but not outstanding. I didnít see any dishes cooked with beer on the menu as others have mentioned they had. ROOM: The rooms range in price from Ä46 for a single to Ä66 and upwards for two or more. The rooms are named after Belgian breweries (I had Maes which featured an aerial photo of their ugly beer factory!). The room was basic just verging on tatty with a view of the fire escape. The shower backed up after a few minutes and I had to turn it off and wait for it to drain. The Wifi kept asking for the password over and over so eventually I gave up on it. No one came to tidy the room up after the first day. The rating I have entered above is for the cafe, not the hotel.

Beautiful and old interior. Quite long beer menu but with Belgian usual suspects only. Poor service though, unfriendly and kitchen service was not available while menu indicated otherwise

Good atmosphere, decent service (as we were sitting at the bar, we didnít have to wait long for anyone to serve us) and more than decent selection. Only downside was that the draught Keyte was quite rancid and sweaty (schraal), while when we got to taste it in another place it was much better and fresher, and Iíve heard stories of the same happening to other beers. There seem to be too many taps for the amount of visitors at the end of the season, cleaning taps should be better.
Selection is good, lots of choice and nice selection of lambics. Overall price-level is pretty decent and acceptable, though some of the bottles are grossly overpriced all of a sudden: do check the beer list before ordering to prevent surprises.
We had a pleasant evening there, and if we wouldnít have encountered the tap problem, marks would have been quite a bit higher.

Went there when visiting a friend of mine. Although it is a large place it is still super cozy. Loads of wood, walls are decorated with advertising signs.
The service is quick and friendly. The selection is enormous, but the menu is a bit unhandy. The prices are normal for a city like this.

Loz and I went here for the first time on Saturday 9th June 2012. This is quite a large bar with upstairs area as well and quite nicely furnished. The beer choice is excellent, I didnít count but I note that on here it states 330 and that would seem a very fair estimate. I had a De Cam Oude Gueuze (I think that is what I had) We also ate here and I must say the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. I had Beef Carbonade cooked with Westmalle Dubbel, Loz had meatballs cooked with Bougogne de Flanders, both were really tasty meals the sauces/gravies of both were wonderful the respective beers had really left their mark. If I had one criticism is that the girl who served us was quite cold and unenthusiastic, and really didnít give out any positive vibes, she only perked up when it came to the bill being settled, I have to say the bar is very good, food very good, beer choice also great but service really let this place down sadly especially when compared to ít Eilandje which had the most lovely and welcoming gentleman serving you and appearing to run this place on his own. I note that others have commented on the service here and expressed similar thoughts, if this was improved I think that this place would be an all round excellent bar.
