First came here about 25 yrs ago when it was a smallish bar of some character. Now it has expanded beyond recognition and has adopted the foreign ’English Bar’ style seen in cities all over the world - everywhere except England that is.Selection is pretty good, although the menu is a bit of a nightmare to read. Service ok. Prices are VERY high(E6.60 for Rochefort 10) and it does seem like a bit of a tourist trap. Certainly not how I remember it from all those years ago.
Quite a large place just off the sea front in Ostend with an enormous list of beers, some of which are not available, many are variants of the normal Belgian popular beers, but plenty to be going on with. It lacks some atmosphere we thought and the service was aimed more at the locals than us visitors, but hey ho. It’s definitely worth a visit but maybe you will have to search hard for anything unusual.

The beerlist is very extensive, but most are "regular" Belgian beers. But with some searching you can find a couple of interesting beers. They also have some nice beers on tap. The place is cosy furnished, a bit like an English pub, including a fireplace. Service was not so good: not helpfull and not very good suggestions. But maybe we had some tough luck with the waiter.
Une carte assez chouette avec une bouffe correct. En revanche le service est juste deplorable. On a l’impression de faire chier les serveurs. 20 minutes pour le premier service. Et sinon toujours en attente du deuxième service. Qu’ils aillent bien crever la bouche ouverte.

It started of pretty nicely . We had an awesome table in the middle of this well-designed, old fashioned bar . Menu is huge ( not in thickness, but the pges are gigantic sized ) and contained reasonable beers to call themselves a specialized beerbar ( yet not the nessecary uniqueness to stand out ) anyway , book contained a lot of mistakes ( wrong / unclear names , wrong descriptions ( de cam geuze was - according to the book - a sweet beer ) it also was a very confusing beerlist ( for instance, big text completed with tiny text on stickers , categories like tripel didnt contain chimay tripel since the ’Beerstyle ’ was trappist ( Aauwtch ? ) , the category of fruit beers wasnt even on the same page as other ones like cherry beer , lambic beer , banana beer , strawberry beer, ’ other beers ’ ( containing the longest list of beers, and was mostly made up by beers that didnt specifically stated the style on the label ) . Pouring a beer from tap was just bloody awefull ( glasses not even full , filled nowhere near as to how it should be , no topping off of the foam ,... Just about ANY mistake that could be made was made . On top of this , no less than 5 people working here ( all 5 I spoke to ) were not able to answer my simple questions ( is this beer more sour, or sweet ?? ) -- except for the answers they found by looking at the bottle and giving an irrelevant answer ( What does this stout taste like ? "black, it sais its 10 ABV ’ .... On the other hand , appart from their unwillingness to help me any further with my simple questions and irritated looks as I asked something about beer , the people were friendly ( also very important ! )
Bottom line : A worthy beerbar in general , but service ( the side of knowledge ) was bloody damn awefull . Still I could recommend this place to just sit and drink, and not get any information . Bottles , BTW , were to be pour by the clientel so at least they didn’t fuck that up ;) Prices were very weird as some stuff was very expensive, and some things were very surprisinlgy cheap . Meet in the middle and say this place has average prices ?

A visit to Ostend is not complete for me without Botteltje. The bottle sign is a trusted sight and reassures me I will have some interesting beers. The atmosphere is brownish but modern and clean, cosy and woody, and quite relaxing if it is not too crowded. Service is always friendly and selection is extensive though exclusively Belgian. I like the menus, which are suspended on hooks at each table and in which new beers are added with stickers - usually the first thing I look for. Some beers in the menu are not available anymore but somehow I always manage to find some regional beer I haven’t tasted yet. Prices are on the high side, though. The food varies from good to disappointing - depends on what you order, but I would recommend the mussels during the season. Benefits from being at the seaside, of course, but a valuable beer house in its own right.
