| Diogène (40), Mirabel, Quebec | | July 6, 2011 Pretty good beer selection, decent food, average service and high prices. Still a good place for beer in the byward market. | | trapped (16), , Turkey | | July 4, 2011 A very nice find in downtown Ottawa! Stated as a wine bar but stocks over 90 beers from all over the world and 30+ domestic microbrews. A good food menu consisting mostly of seafood. Had a separate Belgian beers menu, which included Westvleteren (albeit priced at 50 Canadian dollars!!). | | rejtable (25), Ontario | | May 29, 2011 Place is nice and the selection of beers is great, but the food was only "meh" and the prices for the beer were insane. $13 for a Dieu du Ciel! beer that I can buy just across the river for less than $4???
I would not return. | | FlyingTaco (11), Massachusetts | | July 10, 2009 Original review posting date 5/2/2009...
It seems like someone was having a bad day at the bar, but this was unacceptable. I have edited this for a more thorough explanation but this is one place in Ottawa I will not be frequenting. Here’s how this visit went down...
Well, we walked in on a cool early evening in May to what seemed like a nice place. We asked if there was a bar and the server said "yes, downstairs." However, when I asked if they had beer down there the server said she wasn’t sure. Really? At the same time, another patron seemed to be upset with us because we came in from a different door from the one she came in. BAD omen...but that wasn’t the issue. We walk downstairs to the bar and take a couple places on the end and sit down. I looked at the taps and picked up the beer list in front of me and made a quick attempt to peruse...BUT...not 2 seconds after picking it up the bartender actually PULLED THE BEER MENU OUT OF MY HAND! WTF?! I was dumfounded and mumbled in my amazement. He was obviously looking for conflict because he asked what I said, so I told him I was startled that someone would take something out of A CUSTOMER’S HAND WITH NO EXPLANATION. So he scolded me for "being aggressive." So y’know what? We left. Bugger on this joint...and by the way, the fish smelled raunchy.
| | cfrancis (58), Ottawa, Ontario | | May 19, 2009 [ Updated May 20, 2012 ] Really great atmosphere being in the basement. A great place for that last pint of the night. Only drawback is the price, it’s a little pricey for the drinks although the selection is quite good. Food prices are pretty fair for downtown Ottawa. | | LadySusan (90), Ste-Therese, Quebec | | January 21, 2008 The service is good and they do not rush you. As for food the choices can please almost everybody. As for beers the choice is good but limited. It is a good place to go but there is better in Ottawa. | | jerc (211), Toronto, Ontario | | December 10, 2006 Dark and cozy interior. Decent beer list of LCBO and consignment brews available, but as some have note the prices on stuff like the belgian imports is on the high side. I ordered the $12 steak frites, which came with a servicable ceasar salad and solid fries, my med-well steak arrived very much on the well done side of things and was not mind blowing but for a $12 steak platter I wasn’t expecting the world either. Staff was friendly. Was pretty quiet when i was there mid-afternoon. Great spot in the market and I would go back but unless you’re seeking out the rarities The Black Tomato might be my first choice. | gilvanblight (5), Windsor, Ontario does not count - explanation | | July 22, 2005 Underground bar with a nice dark atmosphere. Quite a bit of seating in what appeared to be a small bar. Wine tasting style service where you order drinks from the bar yourself. Good selection (rivals Pub Itallia) but prices were way too high. Food was good for what we had (pate and cheese) but also overpriced. A bit hoity atmosphere. Only stayed for a quick bite and one drink. |
