46 reviews for John’s Market Place
| CheersMate1 (34), Atlanta, Georgia | | August 11, 2009 Before going to Hair of the Dog, we stopped by John’s Market Place. I though the place looked a little weird i.e. run-down on the outside. Even when I stepped inside I was thinking "oh crap". Looked like an old convenience store. When you step to the back left-hand side of the store you are hit in the face with an amazing selection of beers. Being from Georgia, this was a place where I was happy in my pants. I couldn’t imagine buying all the stuff I really wanted, and how much it would actually cost. I definitely know that I walked out with about 1% of what I actually wanted. Nice place, friendly service, and a selection that would make any Southern person scream for joy. | | darn1207 (24), Tallahassee, Florida | | June 28, 2009 Wish I’d done a rating sooner for this place - because I’ve forgotten a lot of the specifics. Doesn’t look like much on the outside, but has a huge craft brew selection. Remember that I finally found a alesmith yulesmith summer here. had many from the region. the prices seemed very reasonable - at least by my east coast standards. didn’t interact with the staff really at all - so can’t speak to that. great beer store. | | marcus (87), Sacramento, California | | May 15, 2009 I have been going to John’s for years and just discovered I had not rated it. This market has a simply incredible selection of beer from around the world. I usually have trouble finding beers I have not rated, but not so at John’s. One could easily spend a couple hours wandering through the rows of beers from Belgium, Scandinavia, many of the best U.S microbreweries, and just about anywhere that beer is brewed. The staff is quite friendly and helpful. | | leems (27), Portland, Oregon | | May 4, 2009 John’s Market is something else, driving by you would think it were just another crummy neighborhood market, but you would be oh so wrong. Walk in, pass the stacks of wine, and wind your way into the back. They have shelves upon shelves of singles and many beer coolers as well. Imports, local micros, macros from across the US, they have it all. Where else can you find Iron City Light and Ale Smith in a single trip? I rarely walk out of John’s without more than I should, a great shop. They also have keg sales that are reasonably priced. | | IrishBoy (65), Bakersfield, California | | April 13, 2009 Stopped there with Enniskillen and they had a Cascades Brewing tasting going on. Great selection of beers and better prices than other NW beer stores for the same items! Will stop again next time I am through Portland! | | blutt59 (51), Dallas, Texas | | January 10, 2009 neighborhood location has onsite deli I haven’t tried, seems like they have been cutting back on their stock but still has best selection in Portland. huge amount of singles with lots of Belgian, foreign options, usually have 4-5 Fantome, Cantillon, etc, stock can sometimes be disheveled so keep looking, pricing is cheaper than home on a lot of stuff | | kmweaver (113), Sebastopol, California | | November 18, 2008 Huge, comprehensive selection of PNW and international brews in a store that looks like it carries about three beers from the outside. Pretty much everything currently available in bottles from Oregon and Washington, along with tons of random sour beers from Belgium and most current stuff out of Denmark. It would have taken me about an hour to walk through this whole selection if we weren’t in a hurry to get over to HOTD. Great beer stop with friendly and smart service that makes it difficult to leave. | | WeeHeavySD (97), San Diego (Hillcrest), California | | November 18, 2008 Wow this place is crazy. After the dock sale, I went over and got a chance to browse. This place has a massive selection and it just made me want to keep browsing and browsing. Some stuff seemed a tad overpriced and it is a bit cramped in spaces, but there is a crazy number of brews here. | | boFNjackson (54), Portland, Oregon | | October 26, 2008 I’ve heard a lot about this place and it was pretty hyped up for me. Was truly disappointed. I was terribly uncomfortable browsing their aisles. They had stacks of big foot ale from over two years ago, and the place was so gritty and nasty. Needs a remodeling desperately. I was impressed by their selection, but there was no rhyme or reason for how it was shelved making it difficult to find a specific brew. Luckily I was house sitting in the neighborhood and stopped by, but I would never make a trip for this place. Stick to Belmont Station for those closer in town. | | Angeloregon (11), Portland, Oregon | | August 29, 2008 This place has more beers than just about anywhere in Portland metro area. It is an unassuming storefront. In a nice part of Portland (Multnomah Village) near other interesting shops and even a Lucky Lab Public House. Lots of wine, too. the store looks like a run-down mom and pops store in a time warp. they carry any beer available which is good, but has a major drawback: lots of macro brews and several outdated, light struck and heat affected beers. Be warned: many of the beers I’ve purchsed at Johns are funked and skunked. Occasionally you’ll find that diamond in the rough, but overall, be skeptical. The staff are not very knowledgeable of beer. Still, I have to give John’s points for having the courage to carry what most won’t. There’s a leaky over-worked cooler in the back that is usually puddling all over the floor. Convenience store atmosphere that needs a tune up and a cleaning. |
