Friendly, welcoming local just a short walk from the town centre. Winner of CAMRA Town Pub of the Year for past five years back to back. I visted last night (Fri) and found the landlord and a number of regulars around the bar all of whom were very friendly. Inerior decor fairly plain, and the pub is quite brightly lit inside. Visitors to the Horse and Groom will find six handpumps dispensing ale from smaller breweries such as Mighty Oak. "Maldon Gold" and "Auld Fang Syne" were in very good condition. I had already eaten elsewhere beforehand, so did not sample the menu, but what a pleasant surprise when the landlord provided a seafood buffet on the bar! For a small contribution everyone was invited to tuck in - and it was good! And as I left one of the locals was kind enough to put me on the right road to the rail station as I didnít have a map. Now although the pub seemed a little empty for a Friday night donít be fooled - the Horse and Groom is often full in the daytime with plenty of passing trade. Although a walk out of town, my effort was much rewarded, and doubtless I will visit again.
