| sic1314 (33), Leiden, Netherlands | | April 22, 2012 Amazing off the beaten track pub, wonderful beer list for it’s location. Always visited in daytime, so can’t really say what the ambience is when busy - but when in the area, visit! | | Tim Webb (106), Cambridge, England | | December 19, 2010 [ Updated January 9, 2011 ] In the UK, I cannot bring to mind a better place to drink than the Anderson. The pub and the hotel-lounge are entered via doors in different streets. The former is a great wee bar, the best on the Black Isle of Cromarty, and has live local music on Sundays. The latter has local/fusion/New Orleans cuisine almost as an also-ran to the 100+ Belgian beers, dozen or so top-of-the-range Scottish beers from Brewdog and local Highlanders, and the 230+ single malts and 100-ish wine list. Dark but atmospheric, family-run, small-town Scottish Hotelette with big stoves in winter and year-round cosiness. Virtually empty from January to April and closed for four weeks in Nov-early Dec. Miles off the beaten track you will love the fact that someone told you about it. | maltandhops (1), Paris, France does not count - explanation | | September 30, 2010 This pub is a great place with great atmosphere. The whisky bar has a great selection of malts (around 250) and the beer selection is good too.
Good belgian beer on bottles. Real ales from the uk. Anchor ale, Tripel Karmelit on tap.
The American owner is a great fan of malts and beers. It’s great to speak to him around a glass.
This is THE pub to go to if you’re in the Highlands! | | hophop (10), , Scotland | | May 14, 2010 Best pub in the Highlands and one of the best in Scotland. Run by the talented American couple Mr and Mrs Anderson.
Excellent cask ales, Belgian beers and a few unusual keg offerings - Anchor Liberty and some Belgians.
Whisky bar cosy and smart and scruffy publc bar with the locals a good laugh.
Weirdo pony-tailed barman a bit gruff but other staff make up for it. Jim a genuine beer geek. This is a gem worth the detour. | | MartinT (469), Montreal, Quebec | | January 12, 2007 I was totally charmed by The Anderson. Not Jim per say (;P), but the whole business he and his wife run. First off, the vintage room with four-poster bed we had upstairs was very romantic. Then, the Whisky Bar, one of the 2 bars in this building, is one of the coziest pubs I’ve ever been in. The room is small and has a small fireplace. Chalkboards are all over the walls, all containing some juicy information on the many libations on offer. Nearly 200 malt whiskies are available, and just under 100 Belgian bottles. Most of these Belgians are of great quality, Rocheforts, St.Bernardus, Malheur Brut Reserve, Westmalles, Orval, etc. They even had a couple Belgian taps. The second bar is accessible from outside the hotel, and it is here that a few cask ales are being pumped. 3 of them were offered when we visited, and these change all the time. They also had a cask cider, all of which were perfectly cared for. The food is also a major attraction here, as Jim’s wife Anne is a wizard in the kitchen. Fusion cuisine at its best, and a changing menu all the time. There is love and care all over this place and I would not hesitate to spend another long night here. Jim is a beer geek too, so he won’t mind if you start up nerdy conversations about craft beer... |
