| dmschefke (34), Eastpointe, Michigan | | March 16, 2009 [ Updated March 21, 2009 ] The ambiance is pretty cool, since it is like you are in a cellar. A little easy to miss due to location, so pay attention. Selection is better than average, but prices are slightly above average. Likely won’t find myself going here very often with Holiday Market just down the street. Didn’t see this place before it moved, so maybe it was better at one point. | | msante79 (72), Orland Hills, Illinois | | November 21, 2008 [ Updated November 12, 2009 ] Stopped in while in Detroit for business. Small place but in brand new building with small beer selection but geared to the beer geek. Every beer that is in six packs is also available as singles which is awesome. Picked up 5 singes of quality brew. They dont carry any macro brews so even though they don’t have a huge selection they make up with all qualtiy beers. Service was great and would be my go to store if I lived in Detroit. | Browneyedgirl (4), Sterling Heights, Michigan does not count - explanation | | May 20, 2008 [ Updated March 2, 2009 ] Revisted store last week while in Royal Oak. Nice looking store but Still not family friendly, no shopping carts or decent room for strollers. They do have elevator but it is small. Had to use stairs. Most of beer sold in singles but if you are a 4 or 6 pack buyer other places are cheaper. Parking is a mess had to back up to leave parking lot. | | SpudClampDawg (43), Jasper, Indiana | | July 17, 2006 A very small store with an outstanding selection of beer. The sign says 150 beers available and it seems accurate. But all 150 are outstanding beers. A great, concise wine selection as well. The service is fantastic, although the hours are kind of horrific. They close at 5pm Sat and Sunday. | | Sammy (273), Toronto, Ontario | | June 27, 2006 [ Updated August 6, 2009 ] Look for directions on the website. There wa construction at the time which meant a little confusion to a first-timer. A better than average place to buy beer, with a BA working here. Other great features are: the ability to buy singles; choice of outside the fridge beer; some harder to find beers carried; lots of parking; and reasonable prices compared to say New York State and Premier in particular. Putnam had a couple of last bottles of stuff put aside for someone who would appreciate them, and I do. Merci! It was very good to be able to run a chat with a very knowledgeable person, and he was able to carry on a wine conversation at the same time. This is akin to writing with both hands-at the same time.
| | punkrkr27 (22), Berkley, Michigan | | March 20, 2006 Small place but well lit and an excellent slection. Founs some nice stuff there that I haven’t found anywhere else around here. I didn’t have a chance to talk to the staff but they were courteous and asked me several times if I needed any help. Nice place, I will definately be bcak there many more times! | packergirl (2), Marquette, Michigan does not count - explanation | | December 20, 2005 This is the store you want to go to if you are looking for that rare beer find. The guys are friendly and very helpful. They even ordered me my favorite beer that no one in the area has anymore. I highly recommend them!!! | | Crosling (70), Loveland, Colorado | | July 31, 2005 [ Updated August 15, 2005 ] Great Belgian selection, with a nice attention to detail and a very friendly staff. Light lighting and a 60-65 degree temperature is what I liked so much about this place. The beer selection was great, with an emphasis on imports, but a nice selection of American craft as well. I was hoping to find some Founder’s bottles here, like Black Rye, Impy and Devil’s Dancer, but they didn’t have it. That’s my only complaint. | | Brad (16), Berkley, Michigan | | July 12, 2005 Nice place, with a good selection that is constantly improving. Every time I go back there they have got something new. Fairly priced. Nice staff that will walk the store with you and comment on anything you ask. | marburg (5), Michigan does not count - explanation | | July 4, 2005 What Putnam and crew lack in quantity, they more than make up for in first-hand experience, quality, attention to detail, customer feedback, and about every other criteria you could possibly look for in a high-end beer/wine store.
The beer advocate rankings are posted (as of the date the sign was posted) along with Putnam’s own tasting notes which are, as anyone who’s met him can tell you, fun; unique; and generally right-on.
For those interested in things other than bottles, Putnam makes most of his distributor’s keg list available as well at a very reasonable mark up (e.g., 30L of Hoegaarden for like 80 bucks or so). So for parties, family occassions, etc. when you need to introduce Uncle Johnny to a beer other than Miller Lite, Cloverleaf’s your place.
If you live in the Metro Detroit area and are a fan of beer, wine, or liquor, you owe it to yourself to swing by. |
