Pleasant and tidy specialist beer shop tucked away in residential area. Fairly typical range of beers and prices for such a shop - a good focus on local beers, and a selection of beers from Belgian and America. There is an inclination toward some buzz names such as: Kernal, Struise, Mikkeller, De Molen, Thornbridge, Stone, etc, and pretty much all the local breweries, so there should be something to satisfy most beer geeks. If you’re in Southampton, and you’re a beer geek, you’ll like the place, and find it does the job.The shop’s website offers an up to date list that is worth studying. If you’re a big beer buyer and know what you like you may find it worthwhile to check prices against online suppliers such as BeersOfEurope and BeerRitz before making a visit, as there can be a wide difference on some bottles; however, there are plenty of beers in Bitter Virtue that are not available in those stores, and there is the benefit of getting personal advice if you’re not sure what you like, so there is value in paying a visit. I think it’s a place I may be popping into from time to time. And I will certainly take along any beer friends who come to stay or visit.

Excellent beer shop tucked away in a residential area. If you’re not looking for it you’re not going to find it! Brilliant selection, and you cannot fault the service or the value. No trip to the South Coast is complete without it. Treat yourself!

Brilliant little shop in Southampton. I am stuck in Portsmouth on business and this place is an oasis. In the US I would probably knock this place on selection, but if I compare to what people say is best in the UK, Kris Wines, Bitter Virtue has them topped. Super friendly and helpful staff. I honestly have no basis of comparison on value.

Just what southampton needs- a place with a decent wide variety of local and foreign beers. Friendly and clearly knowledgable staff, judging by the wall of beer-related literature behind the counter! The owners are also quite clearly valued members of the beer community. My only wish is that they had some more homebrews from the community perhaps, but that’s insignificant.

A nice shop tucked in a quiet corner of Southampton. The selection’s pretty strong. You’ll find plenty of stuff from Britain and Belgium, with a modest selection of stuff from the US. They seem to enforce a 1-bottle limit on some of the rarer beers. Prices were fine. The service was initially pretty apathetic, but rapidly improved when it became clear that I was spending some solid coin.

Great place to shop for beer.
Good selection of UK micro’s, Belgian, German, Scando’s and some US stuff that you don’t see in too many places.
Dark Star Kiwi was available for take out from the barrel on our visit.
The owners were brilliant and we chatted with them for the whole half hour we were there. Regulars popped in and had a chat with us as well.
We spent quite a bit of £££ between us and we were both given a nice extra for our custom - great touch! And to top it off the lady owner then gave us a lift to the Guide Dog pub, not far away but our bags were pretty damn heavy.
Brilliant place - will be back !!!
