Very cool historic downtown building, originally the stable for Lemp Brewery draft horses. Great food, decent service. Their own Amalgamated beers are excellent and unique (as are their microdistilled spirits) plus an eclectic selection of other "top-shelf" commercial beers. Live music. Interesting, casual decor. I really like this place. UPDATE: "The Stable" brewpub operation was sold October 2011 and renamed "American Craft Standard Brewing & Distilling Co." I enjoyed the grinder I had here and the beers were okay. A decent selection of beers but no sampler available, which is odd for a brewpub. The seating arrangement was too cramped - I practically sat right next to another couple and I think people walked into the back of my chair at least 15 times, quite annoying. Service was slip-shoddy too, forgetting things and then nowhere to be found when my glass went empty.

Nice brewpub, a little disappointed they did not have a sampler, but the three beers we tried were all good. Will have to make a few more trips to sample all of their brews. Great location across the street from the old Lemp Brewery. A neat section of town and well worth the visit.

thursday night pub crawl with phaleslu. large enough crowd for us to not feel like we have a problem, but certainly not crowded. solid tap list. i had an odell ipa, new rate! didn’t try the food. peter tells me about the "food plate" which sounds intriguing, where a plate of whatever they want is served. the building is a highlight. big chandeliers. wood floors. old solid brick building. great service. nice place. would go again!

I would absolutely come back for the killer turn-of-the-century St. Louis atmosphere and German-style session beers. Loved the zoigl. Not so wild about the food. Service was preoccupied. Sloppy-joe-style burgers were amateurish. Micro-distillery here too, so fun for the whole family. Clever draft list even besides the two house beers.

Located in an incredible building at Cherokee and Lemp across from the old Lemp Brewery, this was the actual stable building for the brewery. That’s why it was called The Stable. The new owners have changed it to American Craft Brewing & Distilling, a huge downgrade in my book. They’re wasting what makes it unique for maybe the most generic brewery name I’ve ever heard. Anyway, the building is amazing. There is a ton of historical detail. High, decorative ceiling, lots of wood, perfect light- an awesome atmosphere. The bar isn’t huge and sits in a corner, flanked by the main brewing room and distilling room. A large covered patio is at the corner of the building. The service is occasionally slow but most of the staff is pretty cool. Right now, the tap selection has some empty handles in its 40 or so, but they’re upgrading to 76 soon. About 8 are devoted to the in-house brews, which are so-so. Decent amount of bottles, too. The food is sometimes very good, sometimes bad- another inconsistency of the management change. A nice feature is the "Plate of Food" - you order it, they bring out whatever they want to throw together for a pretty low price. My buddy orders this every time and hasn’t been let down yet. A very cool place, and I hope the owners do things well; botching the name is not a good start.

The prices at the Stable are very disappointing for anyone like myself wanting to see more consumers introduced to great beers. Chimay Grand Reserve 750 ml at $25 is inexcusable. On my last visit, they had no stouts on draft and the least expensive bottle of stout was $16. If this place is someone’s first introduction to good beer, they would come away with the wrong impression. I love the "indoor" beer garden and that it’s in an historically significant building related to the old Lemp Brewery. I really want this place to be successful, but I can’t recommend it to folks who are just starting to discover great beers.

Ok, so my rating for this place maybe a bit biasd. This became my "place from Aug 08 till i left the area sept 09. The staff all knows me and i feel really welcome in this place. Jennifer, the bartender is great and has become one of my friends. While i was finishing my masters in my last year in St Louis, i would come here just about every friday for my weekly "night off" from studying and homework. The food is amazing-get the Steak Grinder or the chicken grinder-they are to die for! Beer selection is somewhat small, but everytap is a good one. They started brewing beer here in mid 09 and the beer is pretty decent and improving. hands down, the best place in St Louis for beer and great food. It didnt hurt that it was literally 2 blocks from my office. This could be my fav place of all time. I miss it dearly!

November 2009. This joint has an awesome location, right across the street from the old Lemp brewery. But IMHO the potential is wasted inside with a dank dark interior not well put together at all. The small brewery is behind glass in a corner. Even at early evening, they were turning good business which was a good sign. We sidled up to the bar and once we finally got the attention of the bartender the service was OK. Had an appetizer which was excellent. The two (of four) house beers were average but drinkable. Besides their own, they sported a hell of a good guest draft and bottle list -- So, worth a stop now and again.

(Visited 09/2008:) The Stable is located on the SW side of St. Louis on Cherokee, not too far from I-55. I stopped on the way back to the STL airport hoping to find a brewpub but evidently they have yet to finalize their license to brew on premise. There is street parking in all directions. The sorrounding area has a warehouse district feel and it carries over to The Stable. Definitely an industrial look on the outside, and the inside is open and spacious with high ceilings. They have several ornate chandeliers, mirrors and antiques, and there is wood everywhere. The small brewing room is behind glass toward the rear, as is the bar. The rest of the space is devoted to table seating. There are around 25 taps with selections such as Charleville, O’Fallon, Bell’s, Schlafly etc. The bottle list is fairly robust with selections from Charleville, Rogue, etc. A decent amount of imports as well, particularly from Russia. Service was good on a weekday lunch. My server doubled as the bartender and filled me in on the brief history of the place and what their plans were for brewing. Pizza was the recommendation for lunch and it was a good one. They have some unique choices for toppings and I was pleased. Overall I will plan on making a return trip here when they are able to brew their own beer. Even without that option it is a worthwhile visit.
