Scotthops (3), Minnesota does not count - explanation | | August 28, 2009 Great bar. Young-ish crowd. Excellent beer options and nice wrap-around bar. Slightly grungy and a little dark inside, which is cool. A few tvs for those wanting to watch sports. I’d rather just drink their beer. One of the best bars in St. Paul. | | bornondate (11), , Wisconsin | | April 7, 2009 Every time I go here, two things are going to happen. Great food, (The Cuban Sand) and great service and more importantly great Beer!!! A must stop every time I’m in St.Paul.
| | WisconsinBeer (10), St Paul, Minnesota | | February 8, 2009 My favorite bar in St. Paul. Tons of taps, always rotating depending on what time of year you come in. 30-40 taps of non-macro beer at all times, plus a solid bottle selection. (Plus they don’t have recurring tap problems like Happy Gnome does) Full bar, so they also have wine and booze. Food is solid, typical pub fare but slightly upscale - no fried food. Service is never over bearing but always friendly. Atmosphere is excellent, lots of dark wood with plenty of cozy booths to relax. Good tunes and a friendly, non meat market, non frat boy/girl crowd. This is definitely one of the better bars in St. Paul, whenever I go the annoyance factor is very low. If you’re in St. Paul and want to go to a decent bar, this is the place. | Hason (1), , Minnesota does not count - explanation | | February 1, 2009 The beer selection was top notch. The staff was friendly, although maybe a little slow, but they were very busy. I’ll go back. | | BVery (25), Burnsville, Minnesota | | January 12, 2009 Great St. Paul bar - loads of great beers available. Service can be a little slow, and I think the staff at the Happy Gnome is generally a little more knowledgable, but the Pig is definitely on my short list of great places to go in the Twin Cities. | | Beerking721 (10), , Minnesota | | November 30, 2008 I recently visited this fine purveyor of excellent beer and food. If I had to sum up a response in one word, it would be "wow!"
Let’s start with atmosphere. Upon approach and entry, one is greeted with anticipation because this bar is located in really cool, historic looking brick building with a nice assortment of neon signs in the windows (which were lit as I visited at night). Once inside, this place has warm colors of dark stained wood, black and deep red accents, and nicely padded booths where we sat. The bar is amazing with perhaps more tap handles configured with fine beers that I’ve ever seen. The menu features beer before food and provides tasting notes for each beer served by category.
Service was provided by a gentleman who was friendly and attentive. He offered us samples of a couple beers to help us in our efforts to choose and was happy to answer questions.
Selection was off the charts. These are connoisseur level beers (we enjoyed Surly Darkness, | tdaglow (6), Minnesota does not count - explanation | | October 23, 2008 What a pub! So much beer and a nacho plate that looks like one of those volcanos you made in grade school. Service can be a little slow and there are usually not enough people staffed but unless you in a hurry to get drunk it’s worth the wait. | BottleNeck (5), Minneapolis, Minnesota does not count - explanation | | April 7, 2008 This is an OK place to go if you’re just after beer. I’ve only ever found one bar with a better selection of beers. The service is variable, but usually pretty good. The food is OK, next to nothing a vegetarian can eat (which is about the dumbest thing they could do since they’re across the street from a natural foods co-op). It gets loud enough to make conversation hard on a busy night, but it’s still pretty comfortable. | crowderm (5), Recklinghausen, Germany does not count - explanation | | March 18, 2008 Very classic, casual american pub feel. The beer selection is great - lots of nice american micros, and a few decent belgians (on a side note, it was nice to see Paulaner Salvator on tap too), although I was a little disappointed to have missed Surly Two. The service was excellent - our server really knew his stuff and was able to make some solid recommendations. Didn’t try the food, but it looked like good, standard pub fare. This really is a must visit for anyone looking for a good brew in the Cities. | | KAF (68), Coralville, Iowa | | February 2, 2008 The atmosphere is great and the music is very casual. We went around 4pm and it wasn’t too busy. The selection here is great. They break up the beer by categories on the menu. Great beer both American and foreign on tap and bottles. The service was awful. Our waiter forgot about us for the last 40 minutes we were there and I had to order my own beer up at the bar and ask the bartender for my bill. The food was pretty good and not expensive. The beer is fairly priced also. We went last night at 7pm and there was nowhere to sit or stand but during the day it is a different story. If you’re in the area this is a must visit. |
