| JaBier (14), Capital City, Ohio | | November 18, 2009 Fifth stop on the super ultimate OSU vs. Penn State slash beer adventure weekend. Place was dead for being a couple miles from the stadium a couple hours before game time. Decent looking place though. Service was good, and she even gave us better directions to the stadium than what we had. Beer was disappointing. Wasn’t all that bad, but didn’t live up to the slightly above average expectations I had of it. Pale and IPA were okay, I guess. Ordered some kind of burger that had BBQ sauce, onion straws and bacon on it. Delicious, as were the garlic fries. Would stop here again if in the area, but wouldn’t go out of my way. | | savnac (57), Palmer, Alaska | | October 25, 2009 Sat outside on a nice sunny afternoon, under the hop vines. Seemed clean and well kept all around. Service was very good, kept everything full without being annoying. The selection was fairly good and diverse for beer and the food menu was excellent. Ordered a few appetizers that were very good. This is a great place to stop by if your in State College or even go out of your way to visit. The beer was excellent, the Jolly Roger Stout was amazing. We also bought some 22oz er’s to go. | | TreborWhip (12), Reading, Pennsylvania | | September 22, 2009 Love this place!!! The food we had was absolutely delicious. I had the homemade meatloaf wrapped in bacon with barley used as the filler. It was served with smashed red potatoes, white asparagus, and bacon gravy......AWESOME. My wife had their version of a veggie burger that she really enjoyed. All their beers are served in the appropriate glassware and at the proper temperature. The place was filled with Penn State fans following the game against Temple. Try the Jolly Roger Stout, but remember, it is not for the faint of heart. | | EithCubes (76), Indiana | | August 19, 2009 In a strip of Wegman’s-Starbucks-Bank-Tire Store/Body Shop-Bank-etc., and a bit far away from the real action of the town. Hop trellises outside (which are indeed used on premises). I usually order nachos at new brewpubs and the nachos here are sub-par. Cheerful vibe with 70s-80s music, mixed group of babies, college students, and septuagenarians. Deco is a little generic and generically sterile, save for the old malt bags hanging on the wall and the occasional local beer coaster from the 30s. Beer, however, is ridiculously good and varied, and every offering seems to have more than a bit of class in reserve. Recommended! | | afireinside96 (29), Mountville, Pennsylvania | | August 18, 2009 As we pulled up to this place it looked as though they were extremely busy. There was no parking spaces left so we had to park across the street at a bank. There was however no wait for a table. Service was decent and the food was very good. Most of the beers were very good to excellent. Definitely worth a stop just be prepared to run across a 4 lane highway if there isn’t any place to park. | | MrChopin (19), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | August 16, 2009 Tucked along commercial stretch. Rather sterile, spacious environment, more a restaurant than bar given the large dining area and small (10 seat) bar. Pretty good service at the bar, even at lunch. Great lineup with 10+ styles on tap. Food pretty standard, huge sandwiches and such for $9-10 or so. You can get 10oz drafts for $2.25 on almost all the beer, a couple at $4.25 per 12oz. Pretty nice place and definitely worth a stop, but it felt a little to "in and out" to me, definitely not the place to spend hours hanging out. | pollocknicity2 (5), Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | August 7, 2009 My husband and I have been to Otto’s twice now, and both times, we got samplers. I thought they did a better job with their lighter beers, say red and below, while their stouts and other darker beers tasted somewhat watery to me. The food was good, and the atmosphere is ok, but one thing that really bothered me both times I was there was that children were there, too. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t like hearing little kids screaming at the next table while I’m trying to enjoy my beer. I love kids, but a brewpub is NOT the place for them. | | wilsomb (29), State College, Pennsylvania | | June 26, 2009 I’m moving within 5 minutes of this place. Maybe I’ll spend a bit of my time there? Don’t get me wrong, Otto’s is a great place with above average food and beer. I just wish I was moving to a place with a really good spot like Easton, PA (Weyerbacher) or San Diego, CA (AleSmith). Otto’s is great. I’ll be there often, but it doesn’t complete me. | | OSLO (80), Perth, Australia | | June 2, 2009 Nice place with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating available. Staff was very friendly and quick to help, and the food was decent. Prices were good for both beers to go and stuff on tap. Overall it is certainly somewhere you have to stop if you are near State College, and if I had gone to school at Penn State I would have been there a lot. | | Beerapprentice (11), Hopatcong, New Jersey | | May 25, 2009 [ Updated May 29, 2009 ] Went to Otto’s with my boyfriend in late May on a trip from Selinsgrove to State College. Had a sampler of 5 and a pint of the Bourbon Jolly Roger. Good stuff, great atmosphere. Seems like a nice hangout. Would go back if it wasn’t a 3 hour drive. Worth the trip when they have rare beers. Good pretzels. |
