| Swillbur (24), Arizona | | January 25, 2012 Boulders is a really great craft brew place. Not sure hom mant taps they have but they are all good ones! Pretty damn good food too! | BeerKristine (6), Arizona does not count - explanation | | March 19, 2011 Great selection, love the staff, but unfortunately the food is just OK. It’s nice to get an independently run place in where a corporate place used to be. Definitely worth a trip! | darwinoid (3), Arizona does not count - explanation | | June 13, 2010 Nice changing selection of draft and bottle beers. Food is meh, but Kristin (who works the weekday afternoons) is nice and is willing to talk beer. Certainly a "go-to" place in Tempe. | | Sammy (408), Toronto, Ontario | | February 5, 2010 If I do a book on lesser known bars around the country, I would likely include this one. A short drive from Tempe’s university hotels, with ample parking, close to the highway. A medium sized place, busier than they could handle at lunchtime with us older guys dropping in. About 24 taps, several with a good selection of lesser known names, an improvement from the web selection. Oh, 60-70 bottles with again an attempt to provide drinkable craft brews that may get lost in the shuffle. Glazed over windows, this is an old school bar, and a welcome supplement to the big chain restaurant/bars about town.
| | hollypocket (10), Arizona | | July 1, 2009 its not a bad place...large draft selection @ decent prices. | | nbutler11 (226), Phoenix, Arizona | | February 6, 2009 Reminds me a lot of the way basements are arranged in the midwest. Feels very rundown, but comfortable. Their food isn’t that impressive, but the taps are decent and the service is solid. | | hellbilly (130), scottsdale über alles, Arizona | | March 31, 2008 old run down beer bar. i could see it getting rowdy at times. i lost count @ 54 beers on the menu. i’m sure there were more. i didn’t see any of the rare/high end stuff the previous guys were talking about. food is decent for the concept and it’s location but... mediocre at best. service was quite perky but uninformed. lots of potential... | | kylefleeger (13), Tempe, Arizona | | February 29, 2008 [ Updated April 6, 2011 ] Boulders right now has
2 Dogfishead Handles and keeps a constant rotation of 90 minute and then a season tap as well. Stone IPA is also a constant constant.
Other Brewery’s on tap include
Stone
Bells
Lagunitas
SKA
Oskar Blues
Strongbow
Dogfish Head
Odell
Taps are on constant rotation with new beers on tap every week.
Occasionally they have some world class beer in bottle. I would like it if they kept bottles in a more frequent rotation but I blame the lack of knowledge in the customer base for this problem. Obviously if more than half the staff new more about what they were serving, this wouldn’t be a problem.
The best thing about this bar is its ability to take suggestion and make it a reality. The staff is very open about what they can get and if you ask enough... or can offer a compelling reason, they will almost always take that suggestion.
Lately, They have added Vegetarian options, changed the menu around and have added at least 10 new recipes. I am at boulders constantly because of the Value of the beer. Stone IPA for 3.50 a pint isn’t very bad. 5.00 for Ska Decadent is a high value beer as well.
MORE BOTTLES ERICK! Let me help!
| Shyam (7), Los Angeles, California does not count - explanation | | December 28, 2007 [ Updated May 31, 2008 ] update:
i don’t think bar is going to be going in the upward direction i thought it would any longer. as it stands its just ok. | | ajm (191), Los Angeles, California | | November 28, 2007 [ Updated September 20, 2008 ] Boulders is the bought-out name of what used to be Old Chicago in Tempe. The decor is exactly the same, as is the mood, but the beer menus are night and day. Boulders is quickly establishing itself as a top-notch destination for craft brews and rare bottles in AZ and the greater southwest. I turn my back for 8 months and it goes from stodgy Old Chicago to a place with Orange Blossom, 4 Dogfish, Old Chub and Stone IRS on tap, and Worldwide Stout, Cantillon, Dogfish 120 and 3 Philosophers on the bottle menu. The plans for this place are unbelievable menu-wise because the management is open to suggestions. Be sure and check out Kyle’s Tap, a local rotating favorite. |
