Found this place using the ’Beer in Japan’ app. I wasn’t overly impressed by their choice of regular taps, but the guest beers were all great. They have two cask pumps and the Sangt Gallen London Calling Real Ale was impressive. The food is typical bland British Pub food. The washroom signs are hilarious.

I really liked the very British feeling here. DJ was playing AC/DC from vinyl and even the Japanese bartender kind of looked like a British person. There was also some British humour written on chalkboard. Selection of some taps and casks including Aldgate’s own ale brewed by Swan Lake (why it is Algate Ale and not Aldgate?) Standard Tokyo prices and nice staff, once again.

To find it, just look for the flag of Britain and take stairs up under it.

Very authentic cosy Pommy pub / inn. Actually done very well when you sit back and assess it. Punters seemed to be all tourists / expats but regardless pretty quite for 7pm on a Thursday night. Taps number about 20 and the geek interest is clearly in the guests (Rogue, Green Flash) and the house beers brewed by the likes of Swan Lake and Baird. Can’t comment on the food but read appropriately (ie bog standard pub classics). English speaking staff and beers well poured. All in all wasn’t blown away but very good for this part of the world.

One of my favourite drinking holes in Japan. Typically for Japan you have to walk up a couple of floors up from the street to get there, which is weirdly like an office building lift. Inside though they have loads of beers on tap including some Baird beers made especially for them. Service is always excellent and you’ll bump into some interesting Brit and US ex-pats, as well as nice locals. They also have a range of British and American beers on tap. Prices are high, but they are everywhere in Japan. Weird paying £10 for a pint.

Had a quick couple early on a Friday night. By the time we left, it was a fair humming. Full of ex pats, which after spending the previous night amongst at Popeyes, detracted a little from it all for me. But some interesting beers on tap, and the service was good.

A wonderful and relaxing little british-style pub very conveniently located smack in the middle of Shibuya’s busiest area. With 18 beers on tap, it doesn’t have the absolute hugest selection of beer around, but the owners know beer well, and have done a great job of choosing good ones. About 5-6 of the taps are constantly rotating with the selections often interesting; recently they’ve been emphasizing American-style IPAs, which I adore (and I gather are currently fashionable). They have a smallish selection of liquor and whisky as well. The food is straight-forward and fairly tasty, with a good selection of vegetarian dishes. The general atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the clientele generally a laid-back mix of expats and Japanese. The staff is professional and friendly. It’s not huge, but there’s a small bar and a mix of small tables and booths; it’s a decent place either alone or in a group. There are TV screens often showing rugby or football (soccer); one time when the place really gets packed is when there’s a big game on.

Good prices on pints. Selection is decent. Had a nice Cornwall Pastie to eat with my porter. First time I was there it was quite full of drunk sailors, but I hear that is not usual. Good, chill place to drink nice beer otherwise.

The Aldgate is right in the middle of the madness that is Shibuya, about a 5 minute walk (or less) from the world’s busiest pedestrian intersection. As an American traveler looking for the authentic Japanese beer bar experience, I didn’t really get that here at first. It’s pretty much a straight up English Pub type place, or so I thought. I see a lot of those in Portland, Seattle, and San Francisico, where I do most of my beer bar drinking, but I came to Japan for something different. And thankfully, since the Japanese brewers are into making British style pales, ESB’s and the like, it was a pleasant surprise to find them fairly well represented on tap here. I like. Prices were pretty good, and yes, the chalk boards are hilarious. The Algate is a good introductory Japanese beer place to dip your toes in the water if you’re a little freaked out about the language barrier. Then you can get serious and go to Ushi-Tora after that.

English style pub in the heart of Shibuya. Real nice beer selection, mostly Japanese micros, with some imports thrown in the mix, as well. Has a couple hand pumped casks also. Staff seemed to know their beer, and spoke english fairly well. Great place to watch a rugby match and have a beer.
