| deyholla (90), Waukesha, Wisconsin | | May 17, 2012 A large wooden space with a large three sided bar. Tap list is large and it rotates fairly frequently. A large selection of in house meads and wines as well. Service isn’t great and food is mediocre. Worth the stop for the beer and mead. | | rumproasts (34), Grand Rapids, Michigan | | May 3, 2012 i was not expecting much when i walked in. the building is very unremarkable. however, the beers ranged from very good to amazing -- not a dud among the dozen i sampled. very highly recommended. | umich03jm (5), Michigan does not count - explanation | | March 30, 2012 By far my favorite brewery on the east side of the state. Amazing beers every time I go there and always a large selection. The food is mediocre at best but I think they allow you to bring in your food too. Wish I could come here everyday. | | nbutler11 (226), Phoenix, Arizona | | March 28, 2012 A must visit if you’re in the Detroit area. Hopefully you have a rental car to go and pick up some bottles or a growler. Cool space with amazing beer, but you probably already knew that. Hell yeah, Kuhnhenn! | Dsenters25 (6), westland, Michigan does not count - explanation | | March 22, 2012 BEER BEER BEER! | | kevinsenn (31), Waterloo, Ontario | | February 21, 2012 Cool little place, nice and open. Big selection of beers, meads, and wines; lots of different varieties. Paddles available for the indecisive. Friendly service provided me with free samples of a couple brews. Beer is on the pricey side, but at least it’s really good. Very few bottles of beer available to go (you can buy growlers of anything, but that’s not as convenient). Free popcorn is kinda fun. Good house-brewed root beer for my pregnant wife :) Would definitely go here again if near the area. | | KickInChalice (20), Chicago, Illinois | | February 17, 2012 The main draw of Kuhnhenn are their beers. They usually have a very good selection on tap and have growlers and some bottles to go. Their focus is clearly on their brewing and not on their marketing or distribution, which explains the high quality of their beers but a sometimes frustrating inability to find their beers or information about the next release.
After going here a few times, my impression is that the service is hit or miss. One time service was slow because the bar was packed (understandable), a few times the bartenders have been very friendly, and once our server acted as if she was allergic to tips.
Although they serve food here, it is probably best to eat first and just come for drinks. After arriving in town late at night, I ended up splitting a few items with my friends, and the consensus was that everything fell somewhere around forgettable. The pizza seemed like it was a frozen pizza warmed up. Having low quality food is so noticeable because the beers are so amazing by comparison, and at this point I expect a high correlation between the two.
One odd thing about their beer pricing - it costs pretty much the same to get a bottle to go as it does to drink the beer on tap.
The atmosphere here is fascinating. Being located in an industrial area outside of Detroit, the bar brings in a true variety of characters. In the afternoon, locals relax with a few beers, and the younger crowd on the weekends includes beer geeks, frat boy types, and hipsters, mixed in with the locals.
This is one of the few places I almost always stop when I am in town. | | Johnsense (33), , | | January 30, 2012 [ Updated April 7, 2012 ] Rustic but very welcomming (and busy!) Was looked after promptly, though abruptly - About a dozen taps were on, fairly good selection of Kuhnhenn beer, including the much lauded Barrel aged 4D. Food seletion was minimal but the mini pizza I had was very good. Their beer is very good, so I’ll recommend Kuhnhenn despite waiting over 10 minutes before being served. | | KPD (64), Michigan | | January 22, 2012 Visited on a snowy Friday, decent crowd, tried 12 different beers from kolsch tp a barrel aged old ale. Range was good to very good. Very limited menu, free popcorn. Nice place a must stop on the north side of Detroit | | beermaven (12), Michigan | | January 21, 2012 [ Updated April 20, 2012 ] The service was the worst I have ever seen in any place! It was the first and last time I was in this place... and the beer was not even close to being ok. The ambiance was bad. It doesn’t matter because they don’t even care. I am surprised they are still open. No one I know has every gone back. It was sad. |
