pghbeerlover (4), Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | April 16, 2012 What a great place but be prepared to walk. After reading reviews on this site for a year i decided to look up a good beer bar while on business in dc. Great draft list and bottle selection but the prices are very high. It really makes me appreciate the face that I live in Pittsburgh and prices are so reasonable. When I entered the building it was very warm and welcoming. Continued to the upstairs part of the building which i guess is what they called the church key. I love food just as much as I love beer so I was supprised to see an all time childhood favorite tater tots. I didnt order them but did get the chicken enchelidas which were wonderful. I also tried a few too many drafts and was too full to try the honey stout ice cream sundae that looked so good. I will definately stop back on my next trip through dc and will save room for this sundae. | | blipp (68), Newark, New Jersey | | April 9, 2012 Really an awesome place. Probably one of the top 5 beer bars I’ve been to. The best thing about this place is being able to get 4 oz. pours of any of the draft beers in a 12 oz snifter glass. Perfect. The selection is great, and has a good deal of locals that I assume don’t distribute very far outside of the D.C. area. If you’re in D.C., it’s a must hit. | | bmerz (61), New York | | March 7, 2012 Wow. Of all the beer places I’ve been around the country and abroad this is one of the best on every level. What’s most impressive perhaps is that the food is on par with beer in Birch & Barley. It’s a fine restaurant and expensive but it was worth every penny. Hands down best gnocchi I’ve had! It’s design is warm and modern. The service was impressively attentive and friendly. The 4.5 oz pour options were perfect for pairing. The list while I find confusing oddly b/c it is organized by character rather than country or style is insanely long, deep, and filled with rarities and well curated choices. I could almost move to DC for it. | | tastybeer (20), Washington DC | | February 29, 2012 First off: Yes, it’s the best beer bar in DC. Huge draft list, usually a quarter of which is stuff you won’t find elsewhere. This is drawfed by the gigantic 500+ bottle list, where you will find tons of rarities. Be prepared to pay though, everything is expensive and prices DO NOT include sales tax (10% in DC). That being said, given the selection, prices are competitive with other trendy DC bars. Very nice ambiance, clean, modern. Bartenders and wait staff are all excellent. Food is very good as well, although the food in CK is primarily pub food, while Birch & Barley is a full service restaurant. Usually fills up early and stays crowded. Definitely the place to visit if you have one night in DC. | | ekiel (10), , | | February 5, 2012 The food is great and so is the beer selection! The beers are a little over priced. | | smegworm (10), Alabama | | February 4, 2012 Expensive bottle selection, overall great place | evanlarkin (5), Northfield, Minnesota does not count - explanation | | January 16, 2012 ChurchKey, my home two blocks from home. Great tap list, great bottle list, and I’ve made quite a few friends there. The edibles and potables can be expensive, but you can always get a small pour or, if you ask nicely, a free taste. | | csaso (71), Missouri | | December 18, 2011 In the upstairs Churchkey part. Amazing selection of draft and bottled beer - local, micro and high end import. Limited food menu, but looks pretty good. Good luck finding a place to park, though, when you come! | | TURDFERGUSON (117), Carrboro, North Carolina | | November 23, 2011 Wish I could have spent some more time here. Excellent service and menu, both food and beer. I was a little overwhelmed. Always am, when I visit the big city bars! Fantastic draft and bottle selection. I’ll be back for sure. I was a hungover the day I visited with GT2, biggurlpanties, and travlr but it was still a kickass time. | | illinismitty (275), Nashville, Tennessee | | November 19, 2011 I finally found some time to hit this place after several recommendations. I only visited Churchkey upstairs. Ambiance is sort of like a contemporary lounge, if that makes any sense. For starters, let me say that the selection is GREAT. I really had a hard time selecting beers to try because there were so many. Rarities pop in from time to time, and I was lucky enough to have Struise Pannepot Reserva on tap on my visit. Most draft beers are served with the option of a 4 oz or 12 ounce serving. You end up paying more, but the upside is that you get to try more beers - I REALLY like that. Another great thing about this place is that most of the beers are served close to their proper serving temp - no ales served at pale lager temperatures. They have quite an elaborate system for their lines and refridgeration, which shows that they care about the beer. I ordered wings and they were about average (I am not a fan of breaded wings). They gave us a free flatbread pizza, which was a little better. Food is typical bar food with a twist. Bartenders were very nice and service was good. Two things I will warn you beer travelers about. One- beers are a little pricey, especially in the bottle ( ie -$27 for SN Life and Limb). It gets very crowded after 6pm every night, and I am told weekends are even worse. So if you can get there between 4-5pm, you should have no problem finding a seat. Definitely check this place out. One of the better beer bars in the US. |
