This one's a gem. It actually is s community co-op bar. It's large, old, and lived-in and oozes character. It's in the middle of a residential part of town and is filled with locals. We arrived Sunday night in the middle of an Irish-style music jam. There isn't an exciting selection but a decent one. Excellent pub.

Small community-owned pub divided into several rooms. It’s kind of old and worn, but the presence of the locals who almost live here warms the place. Seem to have concerts fairly often. The beer choice isn’t the biggest, but worth visiting for the athmosphere. Wall has a photo of pub community outing with landlord in the centre, from 1928, which tells you something.

Visited on 21/1-2013 on The Jorvik Trail.
Small cosy pub, hidden away from the main street. Friendly staff, and good condition on the beers. This multi-room pub has fireplace, dart, and is absolutely worth a visit..

Absolutely loved this place, on my 1st visit this weekend. Lovely atmosphere, , cosy multi-roomed pub, with an old bar billiards table in one room. Spotlessly clean, nice covered outdoor back yard. The bber was in sparkling condition and was the best of a lot we visited over the weekend.

A friendly, old fashioned multi-roomed local pub with seven hand pumps and five keg taps.
I liked the Golden Ball, not least because of the very friendly service and free pork pie portion offered to us by a fellow customer! It retains its original tiles on the outside and on the bar and the decor is fun – flying ducks, pigs, frogs, cars and an unidentified smiling face cut out from someone’s photo album.
Update, January 2013: The pub is now community owned. It has a better beer selection with a few interesting local ales and the flying ducks have flown! (Last visited 21 January 2013).

York’s CAMRA pub of the year in 2004. Around 6-7 casks offer a selection focusing mostly on English classics, but the usual guest can sometimes be seen, so if you’re into a solid pub crawl, this would be one of the pubs you may consider after you’ve done the essential 5 or 6. Loaded with locals listening to cricket and rather close to the canal, perhaps 500meters off the train station. Authentic place with a nice beer garden as well.
