R.I.P Old Sailor Hagar’s. Your current incarnation isn’t half of what you once were. On the premises you brewed what was undoubtedly the best IPAs and ESBs in the lower mainland. You made smoked porter and a mind-numbing barley wine. You made me laugh on your atrium/glassed-in patio with stunning views of the Vancouver skyline and the sunset. Now, you serve some of the original recipes but they are brewed unromantically off-premises at the Howe Sound Brewing Company in Squamish. However, you are kind enough to place some hard-to-find and beers on your tap menu like tasty Crannog. Your atrium still beckons. You still make a great destination after a long hike on the North Shore, especially if you have to catch the SeaBus back to Vancouver. Your location, view, decent beer, and good service make you always a top choice on a pub crawl. P.S. Your food sucks.

Can’t say I’ll be in any rush to return although my visit was memorable. Visited with oakes and CapFlu in May 2007. Wait staff was young and indifferent. Beers were mediocre and other than us, everyone in the crowd was 60+. They were doing a live raffle while we were there for packaged supermarket meat products. Very strange.

Visited on June 20th, 2006. THIS PLACE SHOULD BE DE-LISTED! I’ve had the opportunity to sample the draught at the pub and the bottle; and the bottled versions are MUCH better. This place is dirty and the tap-lines pour lactic crud. At best, this place may be nice for a Sport Bar (with 8 TVs scattered around the place)... but it ain’t a reason to list it. Sailor’s is a real waste of time. If you are set on trying all their "home"-brewed beers - head next door to the off-sale on 1st Street.

The TV reception on the majority of the TVs looked heavily spliced.

Its odd they still pay homage to their past brewer in their Lohins ESB -- as this brewmaster is now at Central City!

I have to disagree with Josh here:except for the Belgian Wit, none of the beers were any more than average at best, Gary is doing a much better job at Central City

As a pub, Hagar’s has little to offer but a typical Vancouver "neighbourhood pub". Food is standard for the style of establishement as well. The beers were great, though, when brewed on premises. I haven’t had them since they began production off-site. Worth a visit if the beers are anything like they used to be. From downtown, take the seabus (from Steamworks, basically) to the Lonsdale Quay, cross the Esplanade and Hagar’s is about a block west of there.

This place definitely has the view going for it, looking back across Burrard Inlet toward downtown Vancouver and Stanley Park. A homey sort of atmosphere with a decent selection of their own beers on tap. As far as I understand though, the Sailor Hagar beers are no longer brewed on site but are made under contract in Squamish. The IPA was still good enough to seek out. Food was pub-style, well-done, nothing special.
