9 reviews for Newport Pizza and Ale House
| yemenmocha (61), Glendale, Arizona | | August 9, 2009 Keep in mind the context - this is a beer bar that happens to service pizza by the slice. The location was nice as far as proximity to the beach, but dear god don’t come here in a decent car with decent attire. In fact, many patrons were missing items of clothing - shirts, shoes, etc.
Beer selection was among the best in San Diego. Hands down, excellent. Actually it was almost too good - too many of the rare, limited release high ABV beers. This is a non-air conditioned pizza joint, it’s hot, and everything is high ABV and/or very hoppy. Oh well, we had local hoppy beers and passed on the rare stuff.
Pizza wasn’t anything special. Wasn’t bad. Selection of pies for your slices was good though.
Service was alright.
Very inexpensive.
| | sauceyhops (10), carlsbad, California | | August 6, 2009 Cool little spot. The food’s not half bad and they always have a solid beer selection. I wouldn’t make a trip just to go there but it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area. | | DaSilky1 (45), San Diego, California | | January 17, 2009 Hey Fantome, Cantillon, Russian River..in OB, that works. Pizza’s pretty tight as well...the Ron Jeremy was tasty. | | phishpond417 (51), Madison, Wisconsin | | October 18, 2008 Pizza and beer. What goes better together then those two things? Nothing I tell you, and this place is as simple as that. Of course only serving beer, they have an awesome selection of tap and in bottles. Including great west brew and some Alaskan beers on tap. The handmade pizza is incredible. And you’re with in shouting distance of the ocean. | | bsierra (11), Vista, California | | April 5, 2008 [ Updated May 17, 2008 ] This place ROCKS and it is my favorite place to be when I visit the surf soaked city of OceanBeach. The tap selection is always insane, with hard to find breweries like Nimbus, Mendocino, Angel City and Mission Brewey along with tons of other outstanding breweries. The pizzas are all kick-ass with the Ron Jeremy, (i call it the John Holmes, personal preference) being my favorite. You can also enjoy a miriad of 42 different vintage Nintendo 64 video games on the big screen, where else can you find that and enjoy a killer beer? The wait-staff is second to none and always are on top of empty beers ready to fill you up again. The standout people are of course the one and only Johhny Henry with his encyclopidic knowledge on every beer in the universe and his evil counterpart Miles slinging the dough. Just watch out if you go to Newport on Halloween, there may be a manic in very obscene short shorts who may try to touch you in an inappropriate fashion, visit at your own risk and try drinking something in the 11-12% neighborhood~ | | LilKem (23), Marietta, Ohio | | February 9, 2008 this is a hidden gem in SD. Now boasting 21 taps, (up from it’s previous 16), this place has taps everywhere, has fantastic pizza, and is a good replacement for those missing the Liar’s Club being close to the ocean and within reasonable driving distance of SD. Nestled on Newport Ave on OB it’s a perfect beachy vibe mixed with amazing brew will leave you wishing you’d heard about it sooner. I can’t wait to go back next time I visit SD | | doubleo (16), San Diego, California | | February 9, 2008 NOTE: As your standing at the register looking at the big row of taps, be sure to look at the taps to your right, they’re the high alcohol ones. Beers like Speedway, Old Crustacean, Chimay White, and A’s the Kaiser are over there. The place is pretty well kept up for being in Ocean Beach. Nice tile and decor, bathroom was OOS though and I had to pee bad. Selection of beers was good, I was almost expecting a little bit better, especially the local stuff, but they still lived up to their No crap, on tap motto. Not a fizzy yellow domestic to be seen anywhere. Beer tasted good, it was a reasonable price $3.75 I believe for a pint, TV, OB, Pizza(didn’t try it, but it looked quality), surf, sunshine, what’s not too like. | | Naven (54), Poway, California | | July 21, 2007 Small little joint in the hippie beach area of Ocean Beach. The selection is not bad at all. They have about 12-15 taps and their motto is "no crap on tap", and while this is generally a true statement, the beer selection IS better at other establishments, but this is by far the best beer selection in Ocean Beach. Today, they had Arogant bastard, Ruination, Stone IPA, Speedway stout, Old Rasputin, Alesmith Grand Cru, Coronado Hoppy Friar, Steelhead, Firestone, Port Session Baja, and a bunch of others. The pizza is actually pretty good. | | bindpmc (15), San Diego, California | | May 14, 2006 First things first, as a one-time east-coaster, I feel qualified to say that by California standards, the pizza is excellent. Good enough even that it would not be out of place in downtown Philly or the Bronx. As far as ambience goes, this is truly a pizza joint. Brightly lit, tiled-floor, no formica booths, but some saloon-style tables. But more importantly, there are sixteen taps. They do a great job of bringing in new stuff and keeping a vast array of styles on draft. Some macros and organic stuff in bottles. Here’s what they had on tap tonight: two Green Flash beers, two Left Coast beers, two Bayhawk beers, Old Rasputin Russian Imp. Stout, two Lost Coast brews, Hemp Ale for the hippies, Hoegaarden and Hacker-Pshorr Weisse for the sissies, Kronenbourg 1664 for the liters, Alaskan Amber, three Deschutes, including Inversion IPA, and Maudite. Not too shabby. |
