4 reviews for La Trappe Cafe & Trappist Lounge
excalibur (8), Louisville, Kentucky does not count - explanation | | October 25, 2009 This is our favorite place and has great atmosphere. The food is excellent and very European. We like the cheese plate, Belgium Fries and fine salads. But the beers are why you come here. Superb selection of Belgium ales poured by knowledgeable friendly people. Our waiter was Belgium and outstanding. Probably 15 or so on tap and a large list of bottled beer. But get there early as it gets crowded quickly. Their hours are a bit strange, but on Friday’s before 6 we got $1 off our draft. | | gail (10), San Francisco, California | | July 7, 2009 Wonderful place that usually looks empty from the outside -- you must go in and down the stairs to an amazing basement bar that feels like Europe. Order some mussels and frites, then get to work deciding what beers you’ll have. It can be difficult to choose.
The owners, Mike and Mike, are wonderful to talk with if you are not there on a crowded weekend night.
Perfect place to bring out of town beergeek friends for a dinner -- you can even take the cable car over the hill from Powell street and get off at the corner here, and/or you can walk though the North Beach neighbohood, always lively and fun.
| | marcus (87), Sacramento, California | | March 7, 2009 The cafe is upstairs in a light and airy setting with nice tables and an excellent menu of mostly Belgian cuisine. The lounge is downstairs in a dark room with excellent decor very much resembling a classic Belgian beer cafe. The beer selection is all Belgian or Belgian-style, and is spelled out in large leather-bound beer lists. The co-owner and barkeep, Mike, really knows his beer and will engage in friendly conversation if the bar is not too busy. I love this place. | | f351c4v (77), Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania | | January 9, 2009 Visited during a business trip in December ’08. Not far from many bus stops via Columbus/Union. Looks like a quaint cafe from the street, and the main floor lives up to that billing... make the trek downstairs, you’ll be glad you did. More of a beer cellar, a dark feeling, but loaded with great people. The owner is a great guy, and certainly knows Belgians. A good variety on draught, more in bottles. The food was great, as well... nothing beats a burger with Chimay cheese! Lots of Belgian fare, along with the aformentioned burgers, and a large cheese list. The people who come here seem to be locals, many aren’t beer geeks, but they were all willing to try the different styles. That said, I’m shocked that I’m the first on RB to rate La Trappe, I feel that it is a MUST see stop on any trip in SF, including Toronado. The ambience is MUCH different than Toronado, but I love both of them. |
