Nice building, pretty wooden interior, lots of separate rooms and corners. Beer selection uninspiring - Greene King handcuffs on this one. Used to be a favourite for weekend lunches, but one I donít even stick my head into nowadays, thereís so much out there thatís better for beer.

Supposed to be the most famous pub in Cambridge, well it was certainly busy on my visit: formally known as The Eagle and Child. I was there early evening Friday 2nd December 2011. It consists of a large front bar, a smaller middle room and a back room with its own bar: outside is a heated courtyard area full of tables, chairs and smokers. My party fell lucky and we only stood for a short while before a table became available in the middle room: our cask conditioned ales being served from the rear bar in the RAF (Royal Air Force) room at the rear. The walls are covered in photos old and new along with other aircraft type pictures, signatures and memorabilia. Although very full, almost overflowing with customers the staff coped well, dispensing hand pulled pint after hand pulled pint assiduously. The three pints I had were in excellent form as were these of friends, plenty of conversations but no music or machines to produce any extra noise: just the hum of many voices enjoying the ale and atmosphere. Didnít try the Eagleís special DNA cask beer (I have "discovered the secret of life" said someone in here back in 1953, according to the plaque outside), the church across the road has a tower dating back to 1033, but no beer named after it, a pity. The pub its self dates to around the 14th century and it shows in places, especially in the middle room where parts of the wall are protected while exhibiting the inner brickwork/wood. This pub is owned by Greene King, but it does stock other breweries beers too: I sometimes knock the brewery, but it has done a good job here, you can even see some of the original signatures of returning WW11 pilots on the ceiling and walls of the RAF bar, done with cigarette lighters, lipstick or candle smoke. All in all a lovely place to have a beer or three, busy or not.

The Eagle is a nice pub, and apparently one steeped in history. The interior is quite homey, with lots of little rooms and alcoves. The beer selection is, for the most part, unexciting, containing a variation of bitters and golden ales. The bartender was friendly, the prices average or slightly higher. I didnít eat any food here, but it looked and smelled good. It was fun having a drink in such an old, renowned pub, but the beer is really not this placeís focus. Probably worth a quick stop if you are visiting Cambridge; the location is convenient.

Es un pub antiguo muy cerca del King college. Siempre hay gente y a veces es dificil conseguir un sitio. En alguna sala hay chimenea y es muy agradable.

The front bar is nothing special but The RAF Bar behind is worth visiting. Itchen Valley ď1966Ē England Expects 4,1% (2010).

Famous old pub in the middle of Cambridge. Great building with lots of cool stuff and decoration, quite big, full of tourists doing the Cambridge thing. Gets a bit impersonal when rammed, but several caskales on tap (shame itís Greene King). Food ok standard pub grub.
