| ChristianScheffel (62), Odense, Denmark | | September 10, 2009 Lots of beer to pick from, and changing quite quickly. The very bare decor gives a very "efficient" drinking impression | | Rune (87), Tromsø, Norway | | August 14, 2009 Ale-related freehouse located on a backstreet corner, just off High Holborn. Eight handpumps, the only regular being Youngs Bitter. All the others seven real ales were new to me, two from Nethergate and two from the Manchester brewery Phoenix, among them. Service minded and friendly barmaid. The place itself is filled with charm and classic English pub atmosphere. A gem for real ale drinkers and ratebeerians as well. Closed at weekends (visited, 03.08.2009). | | berkshirejohn (79), Bracknell, England | | October 27, 2008 A nice Victorian gin-palace style boozer in a quiet backstreet. Interesting selection. | | TimE (130), Tokyo, Japan | | October 22, 2008 I found the quality of beers a bit hit or miss, but did enjoy the quantity. Frustrated that food ends at 9pm though. Worth a stop for a few ticks, but not going to blow you away. | | downender (116), Bristol, England | | October 19, 2008 The previous review describes this pub very accurately. The eight pumps, aside from the Red Car, change constantly and draw upon beers from all over the British isles. A great addition to the local beer scene, along with the nearby Edgar Wallace. | | chriso (161), London, England | | August 11, 2008 Small street corner pub tucked away between Holborn and Fleet Street. Recently given a bit of a makeover by the Red Car Pub Company, which also owns the Wheatsheaf in Borough and the Bell in Cannon Street. Decor is in the bare board vein and drinking, apart from a few high tables and stools, is principally of the vertical variety. Clientele is mainly after work office and legal types. The main draw is the eight beers on handpump. The house beer, Redcar, made by Nethergate is a rebadge of Nethergate Three Nine. The remaining pumps carry a constantly changing range of microbrews, which makes this pretty much the premier ale venue in the city. A nice touch is that the chalkboard shows not only the current beers but the next ones coming on. Not sure about opening times, so I haven’t included them, but, knowing area I wouldn’t be surprised if it is closed at weekends. Didn’t notice whether they do food. |
