| JapanTony (14), , Japan | | July 16, 2009 This is Japan’s beer mecca. Great staff, great beer. And now NON-SMOKING!(Smokers can do so on the balconey though).
Only drawback are the prices (it is Tokyo), and the lack of decent food. However certain beers come with small happy hour plates, so at least it can be free. | | jonno (28), Brisbane, Australia | | April 16, 2009 The place to go...blah blah.I could just copy and paste most of the comments already left about the place. All you need to know is they have lots of ji beer. Good food. nice people. eclectic customers. enjoy | Nesta13 (4), , Australia does not count - explanation | | April 15, 2009 Top notch place. Out of everywhere I’ve drunk beer, this place would be close to the best. Huge selection of very high quality brews, many of which you’ll only find either here or at the brewery.
I was lucky enough to chat to the "master" on a busy Saturday night and he really seems like he knows his stuff.
The food is quite good without being anything special, but it goes great with the beer and the "Happy hour" between 5 and 8 is well worthwhile.
Not the cheapest place to eat and drink, but you wouldn’t expect it to be (and I’ve certainly paid much more for less).
Overall: no complaints at all, I can’t wait to go back again (sadly, it may not be for a while). | | chuwy (15), , Japan | | March 11, 2009 70 beers on tap? sounds perfect. Yet occasionally I turn up and the beers advertised have ran out and there is nothing I really want to pay good money for. Saying that, the number of times I’ve been there and the beers I hoped to have were no longer being served, I could almost always count on something that I knew and loved. Service is fast (sometimes maybe a bit too fast) and your beer arrives in no time. Is it just me or is the quality of the pint slowly going down? There have been many times when I’ve drank a certain beer there and it seemed a little flat or lifeless and know that I’ve had it better in another bar. This has happened on more than one occasion. However, their selection can’t be beaten (from fruit beers to stouts to barley wines to American IPAs) and the atmosphere here is electric, when it’s busy and things really get going. The mecca for beer lovers in Japan.
Food is not so bad but a tad expensive, like the beer. Take advantage of their OhSama set and get a free small foo | | abemorsten (13), , Norway | | March 10, 2009 More japanese craft beers on tap than you will have time to sample at once. I do recommend the BIG sampler with 10 x 20 cl. They where kind enough to let me have them served one by one since I kept a record of what I was having. Friendly knowledgable staff and enthusiastic beer sampling guests along the bar. The owner was a true beer lover who immediately pointed me in the direction of one of the finest brews I’ve ever tasted - a barley wine from Niwa. A beer moment to remember...
Didn’t have any food, although it looked good.
A Tokyo Must! | | motelpogo (20), Plzen, Czech Republic | | January 18, 2009 amazing selection of japanese beers, with an emphasis on more unusual styles, like oyster stout, barley wine and double ipa. not a cheap place to drink, although the sample tray is decent value. i was lucky enough to meet kyoto lefty there, which made it an even better night out | | forst (15), , Italy | | January 13, 2009 70 beers on tap, almost of all them japanese (a few americans mostly from Rogue can be found). Definitely worth a visit, and then one more, and then one more..... | | KyotoLefty (131), Kyoto, Japan | | July 24, 2008 Now with 70 beers on tap, THE place to sample the best beers Japan has to offer. Good specials (be sure to become a member if you are going more than once), good free food during happy hour (5-8). Beers in perfect condition. The Hop Heart is a must try. It’s Aoki san’s better version of a Randall, where you get a top IPA that has been run through two different hop infusions. You can compare the two. Good vintage Barley wines on tap. You can try several different tasting courses as well. If you can go to one bar in Japan, this must be it. The Staff and Aoki know their beers, but you need to speak Japanese to take in their full knowledge. English works ok, though. | | hogfodder (34), Seattle, Washington | | February 19, 2008 [ Updated December 18, 2008 ] The only place in Tokyo I simply had to go to twice. I was in town for the Tokyo Real Ale Festival on the same weekend, which Popeye is essentially the promoter of. The Japanese draft beer list was so impressive I couldn’t do it all in one night. It was almost too good to be true, and I wondered if the selection was especially good just because the festival was that weekend so everybody was there and they pulled out all the stops. Regardless, if that’s how it is all the time at Popeye, I would consider this one of the essential beer bars in the world. Their “display kitchen”-style cask beer systems behind the bar are really cool. Staff was fabulous. Easily the best selection of Hakusekikan beers I found (though I think Ushi-Tora had more Baird). More importantly, Popeye had the greatest range of adventurous styles to choose from. Many of the bars have a lot of Ji-biru beers, but they are often all in the 4%-6% amber, pale, ESB range...kind of like US craft beer bars were 10-12 years ago. Not that you | IslandHaole (5), Onna-Son, Okinawa-Ken, Japan does not count - explanation | | November 13, 2007 Just returned from the weekend in Tokyo and my third visit to this great pub. They have a fantastic Japanese Microbrew stock assortment, a friendly knowledgeable staff and good food as well (Great Oysters on the half shell with Iwate Kura Oyster Stout!) I also highly recommend the Hakusekikan Super Vintage Ale and Swan Lake IPA, both top notch brews and two of the better Japanese made beers I’ve had. |
