RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
Typical microbrew taproom, nothing to fancy, few dartboards and a pool table. Beer is good, and they usually have 1 tap that is something that is not bottled and usually rather experimental, There breakfast stout being a good example. Thursday night is new music night and they also usually tap a firkin as well. A good place to just hang out and have a few pints. Tours and offsales available.

A great, roomy brew pub that offers a simple space for gathering with friends, listening to good new music and enjoying some world class beer.

Enormous bar as soon as you walk in. Very open with generally plain seating. No fancy decor or table arrangements...just a place to drink beer. Had an older crowd when I went on a Friday evening and it was much quieter than the Hopcat that I’d just come from. For such a big place though, I expected to see more variety - but I guess there’s an argument for doing a few things really well as opposed to doing several things average. The porter I wanted to try was fresh out so I opted for the bourbon porter. Served in a brandy snifter, this drink had some kick. It was syrupy and the smell of the bourbon was ever present. I’m not a fan of high alcohol beers so getting a half pint down was a bit of a challenge. Tasted something like Kahlua and cough syrup but in a good way. I’m sure there are others out there that would love it I just found it a little heavy for my buds. My buddy had the red ale and spoke very highly of it - easily the best beer he had out of six other places on our brewery tour of the area.

Sadly, the selection in the tap room is lackingespecially the beers that are kept in their one small fridge. Gorgeous looking bar and large space for noshing on their deli’s sandwichesit’s just a shame that their aren’t more options for sampling and purchasing bottles.

Big pub with plenty of room. The large bar itself is spacy and very inviting. I really liked the atmosphere there, kind of hard to put into words, right from the moment I walked in this pub I had a different feeling that just about all other pubs I’ve ever visited. Crowd is rather young (mostly early twenties) but not the drunken college kind. Cool eclectic crowd. The place is probably doing well because on a Sunday night it was almost packed. So I would suggest to avoid the Friday/Saturday night cause that must be annoyingly packed. Food menu is reasonably priced interesting sandwiches. Probably not the right place if you’re looking for a full cooked meal. Only 10 taps when I was there with 7 of them being their regular bottled beers. I’ll never complain about drinking a Red’s Rye or a Centennial on tap although these are also available in other pubs.

Huge commercial wherehouse feel. 16oz beers were $2 when I was in on Monday evening! The taplist was a bit thin on my visit. I believe they had 7 beers on tap. The service was quick for the size of the crowd. The food was really good. A worthwhile stop.

not as awesome as the old location, but still cool. wait staff is very quick and knowledgable. food is always tasty, a nice selection of sandwiches and such. beer is amazing, usually 8 or 10 on tap at a time. nice place to see a show, although is can get a little loud and difficult to hear.

Visited 4/27/08. Late Sunday afternoon. This place is great. New facility, great area. Spacious and inviting. Pleanty of room inside with convertible widows to allow access to the patio. No sampler per say, but 1/2 pints are available. 10 beers on tap at the time of visit, including Imperial Stout and Rubaeus. 4 or so they don’t bottle. Service as great and the server was quite knowledgable. Didn’t get any food here, but it’s a walk up window with, what looks like quite an interesting menu. If you are anywhere close to Grand Rapids, this is an essential stop!

Has a true brewer ambiance. Best ever sandwiches for lunch. Build your own sandwich with real ingredients. The barley stuffed candles are a nice touch. They usually have 5 regulars on tap, 2 seasonal, and an occasional rare special. Its the heart of GR.

Nice chill atmosphere with focus on good beer. The staff is relaxed and helpful. Did not have any food but I love all their beer. Good prices for the quality, great brewery.

I have been to both locations, and was hesitant to hear that Founders was moving as I wasn’t sure if the ambiance would be changed for the worse. I was pleasantly surprised, as the new location has the same rustic warehouse-y feel as the old location without feeling corporate. Basically, the expansion served just as it was meant to, to keep the brewpub atmosphere while adding on some more room to offer food, more seating, and a more adequate stage area. Their beer is fantastic, and usually well-stocked. I ordered the hummus, my friend ordered one of their HUGE sandwiches. Both servings were enough for 2 people and tasted above average. The food selection is by far the best of any brewpub I’ve been to insofar as sandwiches go. The staff is cool and casual and I have not had a bad experience yet! Also within stumbling distance of a Greyhound bus station.
