| Hudspart (20), Hudsonville, Michigan | | July 22, 2008 Pretty good food, but the beer is so-so at best. All of the beers that I had were pretty weak, but with their typical patrons, I can see why - the first night I was there I saw most people were drinking bud light. Not bad for the middle of nowhere (as compares to only macros to drink). | | chriso (110), London, England | | July 1, 2007 [ Updated January 7, 2009 ] Strange place. It’s in the state park so you have to pay 8 bucks to enter. We wanted to see the falls anyway, so that wasn’t an issue, but that rather dictates the clientele here - mostly one-off (I’d guess) trippers, not beer geeks - and the beer range. The place was packed, with a line waiting for tables. Fortunately, the vast majority of the clientele were family groups so there were plenty of stools at the bar. Unfortunately, they only had three eminently forgettable beers on tap. No sampler tray although they are clearly geared up for people who want to try all the beers as they have small plastic cups by the pumps. But the tasters I got were miniscule - large enough however to make it clear that I didn’t want to have a pint of all the three beers so I plumped for the Stout as the best of a bad bunch. Service was OK but I recognized the leathery bartender referred to by CharlesDarwin immediately. If you are going to the Falls anyway (and they are worth a visit) you’ll want to give this pl | | CharlesDarwin (100), State College, Pennsylvania | | August 18, 2006 [ Updated October 16, 2006 ] This is the only brewpub for miles and miles, too bad it’s horrible. The bartender both times I’ve been there is a leathery, tatooed, gruff barmaid, with a history of multiple felonies and too much eye shadow. First off, you have to pay to park here, unless you come after around 5PM. So, the first time I came here, I bought an annual pass for $24 thinking I’d be back many times, as it’s the only fresh beer for a long ways. Big mistake. Worst $24 ever. I’ve had their three most recent beers and am extremely unimpressed. Apparently, their beer doesn’t need carbonation. Wait, is it beer then? Not really. It’s more like meaty sugar water. Today, I went in to purchase a growler. First, they had to check with the manager to see if they could fill my "jug" from another brewpub (Fitgers). They could, but it would cost $10, as opposed to the $8 I’d pay for a refill with one of their growlers. Then, they had a hissy fit because my growler was brown glass and they couldn’t see where the beer was, as though they might not fill it to the top. The two brewers scoffed at my foreign "jug." I wanted to walk over to them and ask if they would carbonate their beers occasionally and maybe use some hops. I loathe bad brewpubs. They give a bad name to good beer. Only two more trips to make up for my $24 parking blunder. Maybe once there will be some carbonation in my beer. | NightOwl (1), Midland, Michigan does not count - explanation | | July 4, 2005 Only four selections of Falls microbrew available at any given time with nine that they make onsite. Full bar, though I forgot to ask if they offer macros. Decent food, the standard "Up North" fare with smoked fish and pasties. Located inside a state park, so you pay a fee to get to the parking lot. Lots of gift shops and kids running around outside though inside is quieter. |
