September 1, 2007 [ Updated August 24, 2008 ] This is an oasis in the craft beer desert that is south-central Minnesota. Compared to the selection available in the Twin Cities, this is not at all impressive...but when compared to what other local stores have to offer you really can’t complain. There are a series of shelves filled with beer (some singles on the top one, but not too many), and an entire wall of coolers with beer. Admittedly there is a lot of BMC, but there is also some better stuff, including: full selection of Rogue, some Bell’s (not much, but do have Expedition, Kalamazoo and Two Hearted usually), Duvel, Ommegang, Goose Island, and Victory (again, not much). There is much more than this too, as there are probably at least 200 types of beer here, but this is all I can remember right offhand. This place is not worth a trip to if you are from the Twin Cities or somewhere with a decent liquor store, but if you live around Mankato I’m pretty sure it is the best option available.
Update (June, ’08): Selection is still pretty decent for the area, and they now have Surly.
Update (August, ’08): Do not bother with the MGM in North Mankato. The selection is quite terrible compared to this one, and outside of being to get Surly and a few other decent beers, it just isn’t worth it. |
