Steib | Visited on vacation on a weekday afternoon. Interesting mix of locals. Good beers had the daily pils and the gose beer, very nice. Good selection on tap.

theisti | Visited for lunch on a Monday. Nice open layout that is a nice compromise between restaurant and bar. Varied musical selection kept things interesting. I ordered the Puerco mini-burgers and they were very tasty, though be warned that mini is not just a clever name. Also ordered the pretzels - they were not fresh at all and tasted like they had been reheated from the night before. Jalapeno mustard was really good though. Free wifi. Good place.

Stine | Admittedly I just wanted a nice pils today. Also I’d never been, and wanted to give it a try. Uptown. Lots of would be hippies and young professionals complaining about their insubstantial love lives. That’s the way the ambiance always is in this neighborhood. Nice place, though. There’s a patio and that’s all I need today. Waitress knows very little about what’s going on beerwise but she’s friendly and quick. No kellerbier on tap which was a big disappointment. A temper tantrum, and a vienna instead, which was quite good, full of toasted malts and a palpable, subtle depth. Chicken club sandwich to follow, which was also quite good. Maibock after that which was subpar, overly salty, lightly skunky. The beers seem to have this weird, icy sweetness for a house character. Even the dortmunder had a bit of it lingering beneath its clean, grassy bitterness. I dig the german styles though, and to me it’s pretty cool that they stick to that. This is hardly a location for a beer geek. Rather it’s a different type of brewpub that’s doing something simple, understated and quite polished, at least from what I gathered on this one visit. Great as a breath of fresh air, but not recommendable to travelers given all the other great beer that’s around. I’ll be back, hoping for that berliner weiss.

| BottleNeck | This is an OK place to get a beer. The selection leans heavily to what I assume is the brewer’s taste. When I went there was no pale ale to be found. It gets busy and loud pretty quick after 5. The beers are good, but not great. I’d expect more from a brew pub, but for a bar it’s above average.

General_Gao | Visited on a Sunday afternoon. They had 6-7 house beers on tap, all of which were of the Teutonic persuasion. I had a few of them and both were good. They don’t offer sampler trays. The horseshoe shaped bar is long and there are additional tables and booths you can sit in. I’ll definitely return the next time I’m in town.

| Rico_Suave | The beer here is glorified Bud, but the food portions are small and overpriced. Avoid the Herkimer if at all possible.

keoki182 | I came here with a couple friends during happy hour, which Herkimer does well by offering 2 for 1 deals. Not being a fan of German beers in general, I wasn’t too blown away by the Sky Pilot Kellerbier or the Alt. The place itself is nice and very clean with a decent crowd of young professionals and knowledgable college students. There was a group of tools playing Shuffleboard and starting fights with other people who wanted to play, but you’ll find that anywhere. Shuffleboard is serious business for some. Not at all bad beer, but my personal taste preferences would have appreciated a wider range of beer styles.

islay | Herkimer had 6 of its own beers on tap (all in traditional German styles), including some relatively interesting styles. No, schwarzbier, for instance, isn’t some amazing, obscure style, but it is the kind of less popular style that many lesser brewpubs would completely ignore. I got to try the Sky Pilot Kellerbier, which, while not exactly great, is brewed in a ivery/i rare (at least in the U.S.) and intriguing style. The service was fantastic. I came with a large happy hour group, and we had 2 servers who were constantly making trips over to serve us. They did a great job of properly separating all the bills, which can be quite a challenge in a group as large as ours (at least 20 people). I ordered some pretzels, and they took just a little long, so the waiter offered them to me for free. The bar has a young (but not too young), hip, Uptown crowd. It’s a little too dark for my liking, making it difficult to observe the beers. The shufflepuck is a nice touch and was big hit with my group. My pretzels were great. That’s all I tried, but my friends were raving about the food. One called it the best bar food she had ever had! Overall, Herkimer is a fun place with reasonably good (not great, but passable) beer. I’d definitely come back, although more for the ambiance and the food than the brews. There is one big knock against the place: Herkimer doesn’t serve tasting flights.

chris_o | OK brewpub. Beers are all German style and style and generally solid, if uninspiring. They don’t do samplers, or didn’t when we visited, although BuckDich managed to wangle one a couple of days later when the place was much less busy. In the Uptown district, where there is a clutch of decent beer places. Worth a visit if in the area but not an essential stop. Service was OK. Didn’t eat.

decaturstevo | Nice place roomy outside patio area nice and roomy. Inside bar area good as well. Beer selection is ok with no great beer but all I tried were solid drinkers. Didn’t try the food but it sure looked good. Our server did pretty good for the size of our group and the overall weekend crowd. I would like to go back on a weeknight. I don’t think they had samplers either. I wish they had those.
