joebrew (4), St. Paul, Minnesota does not count - explanation | | September 29, 2008 Finally stopped by to see Tylers selection. Very impressive open floorplan, with a nice nice selection of spirits (especially specialties like Eau de Vies, Rare Scotch, and much more). The wine selection is not huge, but well done, with an awesome selection of French wines, and one of the largest Provence selections I have seen anywhere. Now to the beer, not a ton of good stuff in the coolers, considering the store size, but plenty of nice selections. The imports and domestic bombers are quite impressive with, if I remember correctly, 4 four foot section on each side 3 or four sections high. Lots of rare and unique finds to be had in this store. Another section on the back of the import and domestic singles shelf round out the selection. Two end caps housing M & M singles are more than adequate as well. Tyler and the crew have done an awesome job in here, and I look forward to stopping in sometime when Tyler is actually there. On a side note, I was asked twice if I needed help, and I fully believe they would have helped me with any questions I had. | | pepsican (22), the beer wastelands of, Iowa | | July 5, 2008 What else can I say? Tytoanderso went above and beyond helping me at his store. The selection was pretty damn good, and the prices were very reasonable. I ended up having Tyler set a bunch of beer aside for me, and I was able to run in and check out very easily even with a very crowded store. I found some rare gems here, so make sure you give everything a good once over. When I come back through I know where to go... | | tennisjoel (22), Shakopee, Minnesota | | June 8, 2008 Zipps. I finally made it into tytoanderso’s store. What I find is a good selection of micros. Many sold in singles which is a mega plus to ratebeerians. An eclectic group of employees and individuals make this a very interesting store. Not far from the Blue Nile in location. A good find for sure. I will be back. | Guerde (2), Welcome, Minnesota does not count - explanation | | June 4, 2008 I’ve been to Zipp’s several times throughout the past year, and every time I go, the beer selection grows and improves in quality and rarity. The store itself is rather large, and there is now a significant beer section in the coolers and on the shelves. Pretty much all of these upgrades in selection and size of the beer section can be credited to Tyler (aka tytoanderso) who has really devoted a lot of time and effort into resurrecting Zipp’s as a great place to buy craft beer. Most of the limited releases to Minnesota are now seen on the shelves, and there are plenty of singles to choose from. The service is great, and Zipp’s is a must stop if you’re in the metro area. Also I must add that the tastings, (altough infrequent) are just great, and I would highly recommend attending one. | | theisti (71), Leawood, Kansas | | May 8, 2008 [ Updated September 17, 2008 ] Great selection most of what you would want in singles. Great availability of others I have not seen at other places in the Twin Cities. No help really, though I really wasn’t looking for any. Decent layout, a bit stinky and dusty. Right there with Blue Max in terms of selection. Blue max wins on Belgian and Eastern European, I prefer zipps for domestics, particularly in selection in singles. Bonus points for being right by where my Grandmother lived. Brought back memories driving past the earth apartments again. UPDATED - In further visits and pick ups by family, Tyler has been incredibly helpful. | BottleNeck (5), Minneapolis, Minnesota does not count - explanation | | April 7, 2008 Zipps doesn’t have the greatest selection, but they do try to get some good stuff. For a small place, their beer selection is slightly above average and there wine selection is pretty good. The staff doesn’t have a lot of experts, but they’re happy to help and friendly. You can count on finding something you want, and occasionally something a bit obscure (they were one of the first stores in town to carry Flying Dog for instance). Mostly they’re just a really great for a neighborhood liquor store. | | Syd (22), Twin Cities Metro, Minnesota | | February 19, 2008 [ Updated May 3, 2008 ] I stopped by here on my way back from my trip to Sconni. The selection is pretty good. They seem to have some Belgians and some US craft brewers I don’t normally see around the TC’s, but they also carry fewer beers overall. I did get help from somebody, but I had to seek him out. Not a bad place... Update 5/1/2008 - now on my regular two state tour of bottle shops as selection improves daily and service is great. | | grimreeser (14), Minnesota | | February 5, 2008 I usually stop here before or after visitng the Blue Nile, which is right down the street. Nice place for singles. Service is decent overall. The floor staff is very good, but the cashiers seem indifferent at best. | | BDR (48), Roseville, Minnesota | | January 25, 2008 [ Updated February 5, 2008 ] I can’t believe I didn’t rate this place yet. Tyler and the guys have put together nice selection, particularly singles. Not a lot of cooler space, but that’s not a big deal. I usually speak with Tyler or one of the other managers, so the service is top notch. Excellent selection of Scotch and Sake as well. | | LawStudent09 (58), Saint Paul, Minnesota | | January 19, 2008 [ Updated October 10, 2008 ] 1/19/08
I have met two of the guys that work here and thought I would check the place out. Unfortunately neither of them were working and the guy who checked me and my wife out insisted on looking at our I.D.’s and then proceeded to look them up in a book and then tossed them back (Dick). The selection was pretty good. They have quite a few singles and a barrel of sale items that appear to not have been touched in years. They had some imports that I haven’t seen anywhere else as well as 12 oz. bottles of various Jolly Pumpkin ales. Aside from the moron at the check out this place was nice.
1/25/08 Follow up
As a follow up, after my berating of the service, I was contacted by an employee here who apologized to me about the service I received. To go out of your way to make a customer feel better is outstanding!
