November 15, 2009 25-30 minutes by foot from old Heineken brewery. Typical beer decoration (lots of Belgian beer banners and pictures). Rather dark place with several interesting beers and one house beer (Hesp Blond) which was quite stale. Not so many people, however the service was slow. Not worth of detour. |

August 12, 2009 A famous journalist hangout, at least when the big city papers still had their newsrooms around the corner. A local’s bar now to be sure very nicely placed along the Amstel river. I tried their own beer of course, which I quite liked. Beyond that a nice mix of Belgian and Dutch beers. |

June 29, 2009 Although the atmosphere of the interior and especially the patio across the street that fronts the Amstel was very nice, the service was very poor. I am used to slow service in Europe but the service on the patio was non existent. After waiting 20 minutes I went in the bar and was greeted by a bartender who seemed put out by my request for beer. He insisted the Flying Dog was an IPA when it was obviously a stout and refused to serve me beer in a glass. Instead he gave me a plastic cup. Although by my observation others who walked in the bar and were sitting on the patio were being served in a glass. We intended to eat here but left and found a small Italian place that only served Peroni. But the friendly service and good food more than made up for the lousy beer selection. |

June 1, 2009 Classic Dutch brown cafe style pub in the Weesperzijde district bordering the Amstel. Visitors will be greeted by friendly and attentive staff, lively punters and a range of no fewer than twenty draught beers. A comprehensive spirits range is stocked in addition, and an imaginative food menu is offered. A separate tapas menu is available at the bar.
The pub is divided into three distinct areas; note the back-lit stained-glass window in the dining area. Live music is staged on Sundays from 1630. |

April 19, 2009 Fairly large brown café alongside the river Amstel, near Amsterdam Amstel Station. Inside is a long bar on the right with 15 taps, including a house beer and some rarer tap-offerings along with some regular stuff like De Koninck and Weihenstephaner Weisse. Lots of wood in the interior and tables, with quite a lot of seats. At the end of the bar you can enter a room with more tables, which is more a restaurant than a bar. I haven’t tried the food, but the menu looks good and is not very expensive. The main attraction however is their large patio across the road, straight at the river Amstel. There you have a very nice view on the river and the 17th-18th century houses on the other side. It’s packed on a sunny day. Highly recommended and worth a short detour. |
