RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
Why You Should Go: This terrific beer distributor flies under the beerseeker’s radar with a very low profile and out-of-the-way Lower East Side location. The family-run business’s owners couldn’t be nicer and the selection has several gems: Cantillon lambics, Vermeer, La Bavaisienne, Sans Culottes and Salopian share shelf space with Magic Hat Humdingers, Victory 750’s, Southampton Triple, Grand Cru, Saison, Double White, Secret Ale, Imperial Porter, Abbot 12 (and several other Southamptons) for sale at very low prices (for Manhattan). As of 8/05, plenty of Southampton, Stone, Bear Republic, exotic ceramic Rogue brews and other rare/hard-to-finds. The selection is better than ever (though critcs say Whole Foods has passed them by) and the prices remain quite low.
In AustinPowers’ opinion New Beer handily surpasses both Manhattan’s Happy Deli and Brooklyn’s American Beer Distributors as THE place to beer shop. Some of the stock is dusty and has been on the shelf for awhile, but at least it’s there!
Mention you’re from RateBeer.com to either of the two brothers who own the store (Harry or Paris), and it’s likely they’ll hook you up with a freebie.
History: In business since the late 1960’s, New Beer has recently retooled itself as a microbrew retail mecca.
How To Get There: Take the F or V subway line to the Lower East Side/2nd Ave stop (at Houston St) and walk 3 blocks south on Chrystie St (Note: South of Houston St., Second Ave. is called Chrystie St.). New Beer Distributors will be on your right (west side of Chrystie St.) just south of Rivington St.
Two Birds, One Stone: Consider walking one block to the authentic Cologne-style beer bar (serving Kolsch!) Loreley Restaurant & Biergarten located at 7 Rivington St. (half a block North of New Beer, then half a block West on Rivington St.).

| xibalba89 | Open til 6 monday through saturday, this is the place to go to get beers for a buck or so cheaper than you’ll find them at Whole Foods, just a few blocks away. I go here a lot when I can... makes my habit more affordable!

| jrt | Easily the best beer shop in NYC. Some beers availabe - Fantome Saison, Cuvee du 7me, three kinds of Thiriez, Saison Pipaix, several Cantillions, 4 kinds of Birrifico Barley etc. Lots of Rogue, Southhampton, Dogfishead, too.
Tons of British and German beers.
Basically a tremendous selection of beer, and the staff is by far the friendliest in NYC. The prices are considerably better than Whole Foods, which is down the street. Come here first, and buy it cheaper!

| Boesky | Nice selection of local, micro, and int’l beers on the lower East side. Friendly, helpful staff. Good prices.

rudolf | The ambiance has been mentioned before - its a warehouse and you have to pay for the beer through bulletproof glass - its odd. The selection is very solid but not huge. Still, they don’t stock much crap - I wanted to buy about a third of what they had in stock. Stuff we can’t get in Buffalo despite being in the same state - Goose Island’s bigger beers (bourbon county, matilda, etc), a bunch of southampton stuff, a few Capitan Lawrence bottles. Certainly worth a stop.

waolsen | I’ve been there twice in two times to the city. selection of bombers is excellent. Great East Coast selection and pretty good national selection overall. I dropped $300 while leaving alot more I wanted to take home on the counter. A must hit. It basically a garage and service isn’t the greatest but the selection makes up for it. Nice location. Near Loreley’s and Whole Foods. Easy stop of the train(thanks to the NY forum for directing me). One of the best I’ve ever been to.

| Flyer | The first time I came here, I was disappointed because they had virtually nothing that couldn’t be found in my hometown of Milwaukee. This time, however, I found excellent representation of Weyerbacher beers which only goes to show that I should visit every time I come to New York, because you never know. It’s a dump even by the standards of a warehouse, which it is but (A) worth going out of your way for, even if there’s only a 50-50 chance of coming across something that’s hard to find (because the Manhattan off-premise beer scene isn’t so good), and (B) if you’re into neighborhoods like the Lower East Side (which I am), you’re already there anyway. The guy running the place was also pretty friendly, though I have no idea how knowledgable he was.

Ramenen | Wow great place. Great Selection mostly from US, Belgium, UK and Germany. The staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable, they even recommended some beer bars in brooklyn. Prices are great. The only con is that is hard to get there, your best choice is to take a taxi. A must go.

TeamTrappist | I have yet to see a store in the ny metro area with a better selection than New Beer. Friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff too. For the most part their prices are the lowest that I have seen. Of course not on everything though certain items were significantly lower than some Brooklyn and Long Island shops. They have at least 80 different Belgian bottles, close to that in Micros, and a smaller but decent German, and English selection. Definitely worth a visit.

yobdoog | One of the best bottle shops in NYC. Easily accessable by subways. They always have a great selection and are willing to talk beer, sometimes. You can get some singles in the fridge but for the most part sixers and bigger bottles. They do get new releases and imports a lot, so you can get some odd Italian beers and such. Also get rare stuff and some aged stuff jsut have to know where to look or when to go in. I have not filled any growlers yet but they did put in a grolwer filling station and also fills other size bottles like 22oz and caps. Worth the trip.

CaptainCougar | The place is essentially a warehouse and to date is the only store I’ve purchased beer at where the cashier sat behind bulletproof glass. That said, there were some great beers here including rarities from Stone, Southampton, Southern Tier, and Captian Lawrence among others. And the prices were some of the best I’ve seen anywhere, which is amazing considering this metropolitan location. Certainly worth stopping at if you’re in the NYC area.
