98 reviews for The Ginger Man (NYC)
Pawola22 (7), Kansas City, Missouri does not count - explanation | | November 24, 2009 Visited twice while I was in NYC I liked it so much. The atmosphere was really cool. It was a place with people both dressed very nicely and people dressed very casually. Suits and sweatshirts seemed to fit in together. The lighting was nice and the decor was pretty cool too. The service was quick, the waitresses were pleasant, and the female bartender really knew her stuff. I didn’t eat, but it looked like the menu was pretty good. They had a great selection of stuff I typically can’t get in the midwest. Good tap list as well as bottle list. It was packed, but never seemed overcrowded. A must visit. | | Pivoyager (36), Gaithersburg, Maryland | | November 24, 2009 After a pint at d.b.a. . I did what I have always done when in Manhattan: I had to stop here. In fact, in the ten or so years that Ginger Man has sat near the corner of Madison and East 36th, I have never visited New York without failing to drop by - the best time to do so would be on an early weekday afternoon. But then no beer lover should take a bite from the Big Apple without drinking a pint or two (not to mention spending a sizable chunk of change) at Ginger Man, which is one best beer bars in the city if not on the East Coast.
The beer list has always been amazing! On tap are sixty draughts from around the world, many not being available in the US. Of course, cask-conditioned beer is always available. I appreciate the consistent freshness of the beers and the efficient, prompt and knowledgeable staff. The food ain’t bad either.
It is a handsome bar as well: high ceiling, a very long wooden bar that is opposite several booths running along the wall towards the back. In the front, to the immediate right are scattered a few tables and a couple of coveted sofas. In the back off to the right is another lounge area complete with additional sofas and comfy chairs. Need I say more? To be here is to be in beervana.
| | Pwn3d (38), Manhattan, New York | | November 14, 2009 I’ve been to the one in SoNo a bunch before visiting this location. Large place that is always packed. Nice atmosphere... dark wood, crimson suede, near elegant..almost reading room style.. drinking area in the back right. Excellent selection of beer and a great beer bar... However, with Rattle n Hum so close I almost always pass this place by. They don’t keep things quite as interesting as RnH. | | mnurda (22), Winnipeg, Manitoba | | October 14, 2009 Visited on a Friday evening in August. Place was packed. Great assortment of taps. Super busy bartenders. Would definitely like to back when I had more time. | | DeadGirl (32), West Palm Beach, Florida | | October 10, 2009 [ Updated October 11, 2009 ] Go for the most diverse beer selection in New York City, leave because they refuse to own a single TV in the establishment. The casually-dressed staff members don’t have time to be friendly, as the place is beyond crowded with anybody but beer fanatics. Ask the staff if they serve more than five different beers in one night, and they’ll most likely tell you they’ve only sold Bud or Bud Light, despite the mad number of taps they have. By the way, "Everything you know about beer is wrong." as stated by one of the managers. New staff members have to take a two week long class on beer while they train, no excuses. Funny, how when I asked what an IPA was they didn’t seem to know what it stood for. #4 on 10102009 DG. | | vtafro (18), , New Jersey | | September 29, 2009 Not a huge fan. Always ridiculously busy, usually only one beer i want to try from their huge tap list, Bottle list is not exactly easiest to figure out sizes of bottles, and not a lot of time to ask questions bar tenders will just move on. | | thornecb (14), Marblehead, Massachusetts | | September 14, 2009 Classic wood bar with plenty of bar stools and tables, but can get pretty crowded on weekends. Impressive beer list (had the cask Storm King)...value good for Manhattan. Barkeeps seem to know their stuff and will give you samples if you ask. | | jredmond (37), New Jersey | | August 24, 2009 I was finally able to get to The Ginger Man bar this past weekend. The place has a great ambiance - tall ceilings, lots of big wooden tables, and a lounge area towards the rear with a bunch of couches. The beer menu is impressive boasting rareties, seasonals, and vintage bottles. The pricing isnt rediculous. Service is good. | | Radek Kliber (26), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario | | August 6, 2009 [ Updated August 16, 2009 ] Great place on 36th. Outside not most welcoming but inside super classy. 70 taps for you to choose from, server’s friendly and beer knowledgeable. Clean, spotless. Good value with 4 brew sampler set fro 11 $. Interesting line up, something for everybody. Often found hidden gems… Must visit when in NY | | WeeHeavySD (100), San Diego (Hillcrest), California | | August 5, 2009 Seriously mixed feelings about this place. 1st why is it in midtown, why oh why, if i still lived in NYC I’d cry that I had to schlep here. 2 its too damn load, get some sound padding and allow me to hear my self think. 3rd though tap list is quite nice and prolific, bottles are pretty good too and prices are better if only by a little compared to Rattle N’ Hum. Bottle List meets a clear pet peeve for me though. Why list size of the bottle only next to 750mls as 25ozs and not next to others. Where clearly some are 12oz and some are 22oz. If the price difference between a 12oz and a 22oz is 2 or 3 bucks thats a big difference in the amount of beer your going to get so should know. All told I didn’t get to experience this to the fullest but it passes muster and begs me to come back if only to find something as hard as it is that I have yet to have. Plus hitachino nest on tap is impressive (and alesmith in bottles is fun from my SD perspective). |
